🚗🔥 Driving Tips During a Wildfire Evacuation

When it’s time to go, your car is your safest refuge—if you know how to use it right:

✅ Lights on — keep your headlights on
✅ Buckle up — seatbelts save lives
✅ Carpool smart — fill every seat, help neighbors (especially elderly or disabled)
✅ Stay calm — drive slowly, don’t pass in low visibility, don’t panic in traffic
✅ Air on inside — keep windows up, AC & recirculation on
✅ Stay informed — tune in to local news radio
✅ Stick to pavement — fire roads are for firefighters, not evacuation routes
✅ Avoid stopping on “inside turns” on roads where unburned vegetation lies in the drainage below the road
✅ If trapped — stay in your car or move to a safe refuge area

🚙💨 Pro tip: Take the vehicle that’s most capable and has the fullest gas tank

Your safety—and your community’s—depends on staying calm and prepared.

6:45 pm UPDATE: A tsunami ADVISORY is now in effect for the Bay Area. An advisory means stay out of the ocean and off beaches. Waves expected to be less than 1 feet at this time. Some flooding may occur in low-lying areas.

A tsunami WATCH is in effect for the Bay Area and the entire West Coast following an 8.7 earthquake off eastern Russia. A WATCH means coastal communities need to be prepared to seek higher ground if ordered in the event tsunami waves are observed. If a wave was generated, it would be expected in San Francisco at approximately 12:40 am.

A Tsunami Watch is in effect for the California coast, including all coastal regions in the Bay Area and Central Coast, due to an 8.7 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Kamchatka. People along the coast should stand by for further information. Estimated time of arrival is 12:15 AM on July 30 at Monterey and 12:40 AM on July 30 at San Francisco. 🔥 In 2017, the Tubbs Fire tore through Northern California, destroying more than 5,600 structures—including the home of author and cartoonist Brian Fies. In the aftermath, Brian created A Fire Story, a graphic memoir that documents the trauma of loss and offers a powerful warning to those living in high-fire risk areas.

Join us at the Mill Valley Library this Thursday, July 24 at 6:00 pm for a timely conversation with Brian about wildfires, resilience, and finding a path forward.
