Join us at Green Pastures Recreation Area and help give back to this special place. From trail tidying and litter pickup to sprucing up picnic areas, your efforts will help keep Green Pastures welcoming for all who visit.

📣 We're bringing back our Homeschool Naturalist series!

Homeschool Naturalist is a monthly outdoor education series designed for homeschool students of all ages. 🚸 We will explore nature-based topics through hands-on activities, guided discovery and time spent in the great outdoors.

The first session, back by popular demand, is Hooked on Fishing. 🎣 Kids will learn fishing basics, from rods and casting to knots and rigging, then try their luck at the creek or lake. Younger homeschoolers can enjoy a fish-printing craft.

😎 We were thrilled to host a Youth Conservation Corps crew this summer, and wow, did they make an impact! One of their biggest accomplishments was building a new natural playground near the beach area.

It comes complete with a slide, tic‑tac‑toe board, stepping logs, a mud kitchen and even a little bridge. 🌿 It’s the perfect new spot for families to explore, play and enjoy the sunshine while hanging out at the beach.

Huge thanks to our YCC crew for their hard work and creativity! 👏💚

Hike the Forge is coming this September!

Get outside and explore Clifton Forge during our month-long Hike the Forge Challenge! Throughout September, we’re inviting residents and visitors to hit the trails, discover some of our favorite outdoor spaces, and have a little fun along the way.

Hike 4 of our 5 featured trails and earn local prizes!

We’ll also have guided trail hikes and special kids’ events throughout the month, so there will be plenty of opportunities to get involved—whether you’re a regular hiker or exploring these trails for the first time.

🦉 Step into the quiet mysterious woods after dark for an unforgettable experience during our Owl Prowl tomorrow. This will be a ranger-led interpretive hike as we explore the nocturnal world of owls.

Please note that this hike is on uneven terrain, and we will be navigating the woods at night, which brings certain risks. The trail could be up to a mile long, so make sure you’re prepared for the challenge. Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes, bring a flashlight, and sign up in advance at the Park Office to reserve your spot. 🔦

Looking for a way to give back to nature and enjoy the great outdoors? Join us for our Monthly Volunteer Workday at Douthat State Park!

✨ What to Expect:
✅ Trail maintenance and improvement projects
✅ Help preserve the legacy of our historic CCC-built trails (since the 1930s!)

Come help us kick off the brand-new Pollinator Garden! 🦋

We're hosting a hands-on volunteer workday to get the space ready for planting. We'll be pulling up old landscaping plastic, resetting pavers, spreading fresh topsoil, and preparing a future home for native pollinators. 🪴

Bring along gloves, eye protection, closed-toe shoes, plenty of water, and your love for blooms and buzzing pollinators. 🚰

All ages and skill levels are welcome-no experience needed!

Pollinators are essential to healthy ecosystems, and your help will create a thriving space for butterflies, bees, and other beneficial species that call Douthat home. Come spend a rewarding day outdoors and make a difference!
