Each and every one of us lives in a watershed. A watershed is the area of land in which all of the water that falls onto that land drains into a single outlet, often a stream or river. A beautiful video showcasing another of our local watershed neighbors and partners (and exceptionally narrated by James Earl Jones to boot!): The Great Swamp.

Far too few people who benefit from this and other watersheds realize where their drinking water comes from, and the need to protect it. Please continue to share the message of the importance of clean water!

From our watershed neighbors to the west: The Wallkill River Watershed Alliance

The last two summers, toxic neon-green algal blooms have plagued miles of the Wallkill River, likely a result of high concentrations of nutrients from sewage and runoff into the river. Aside from dramatically affecting the water quality, algal blooms severely limit recreational activities in and around the watershed, hurting local businesses.

Want more information and to learn what you and your community can do to help protect the Wallkill or your own local watershed? A "Wallkill River Summit" will be held will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. March 28 at the SUNY New Paltz Student Union Building.

Help the watershed - Don’t flush unused medications! Pharmaceuticals flushed down the drain of public water systems eventually find their way into our rivers and streams, having negative impacts on the plants and animals found there.

Take advantage of these opportunities to safely and responsibly dispose of unused medications, at events organized by Dutchess County STOP-DWI and the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from Riverkeeper, and funded by the NYS Department of Health!

, one of the findings was that the water is burdened with more pharmaceuticals at higher concentrations near sewage treatment plants.
