Following a detailed weather briefing from the National Weather Service this afternoon, Baldwin County is at Enhanced Risk for hazardous weather. Forecasts indicate the potential for sustained wind gusts exceeding 40 mph. These conditions fall outside the safety parameters for our school bus fleet, as high winds pose a significant tipping risk for high-profile vehicles. Also, the long-range timing of this front, combined with the potential for discrete supercell development, creates a window of danger that spans the entire school day.

To limit travel for our students, employees, and families during these peak hours of risk, the district will transition to a Remote Learning Day for tomorrow, Monday, March 16.

While our physical buildings will be closed, we want to ensure our students remain academically engaged. Teachers will provide updates in Google and students can log in to the Georgia Online Testing Experience to practice at: https://portal.te.drcedirect.com/GA/gaott

CHANGES SINCE LAST UPDATE:
There is an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) added for parts of southwest Georgia including Columbus given the potential of storms taking advantage of the environment and forming well ahead of the main line of storms (further expansion possible with future updates), as well as southeast Georgia for later tomorrow morning.

KEY MESSAGES:
Increasing confidence in widespread severe weather from this evening through Monday morning for all of North and Central Georgia. However, exact timing/duration still remains highly uncertain.
The main line of strong to severe thunderstorms associated with a strong cold front will move from west to east across the area beginning Sunday Night and lasting until it pushes east of the area by Monday afternoon.
At least a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 3) for severe weather covers all of North and Central Georgia for this time period.
Widespread sub-freezing temperatures will follow the strong cold front which is likely to pose a significant threat to spring crops and vegetation.
Potential record lows for Columbus and Macon for Monday Night/Tuesday morning are possible.

WHAT:
Severe Potential:
Damaging winds (up to 60 mph) and a tornado are possible in the vicinity of the warm front this afternoon.
Damaging winds (up to 70 mph or more) and a few tornadoes are the main threat associated with the line and for any stronger cells forming out ahead of the line.
Sub-freezing Temperatures: Widespread lows in the 20s to low 30s are forecast.
Wind chills in the teens to low 20s are forecast areawide.
