September is National Preparedness Month — a great reminder that being prepared before an emergency can make all the difference.

Emergencies can happen at any time, whether it’s severe weather, a power outage, a medical emergency, or another unexpected situation. Taking a few simple steps now can help keep you and your family safer when every minute matters.

This month, we encourage families to:

* Make a family emergency plan
* Keep an emergency supply kit ready
* Know important phone numbers and meeting locations
* Learn CPR and First Aid
* Learn Stop the Bleed skills
* Become familiar with Mental Health First Aid
* Make sure children are riding safely with properly installed car seats

Preparedness isn’t about being afraid — it’s about being ready.

Throughout September, the Jenkins County Family Enrichment Center will be sharing helpful preparedness tips and resources to help our community stay informed, prepared, and safe.

Prepare today. Protect tomorrow.

We are excited to announce that our employee James Nease is now officially a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) through the National Child Passenger Safety Certification program!

This certification allows me to help parents and caregivers make sure their child’s car seat is the right fit, installed correctly, and being used safely.

I’m looking forward to bringing car seat safety education and seat checks to families throughout Jenkins County and our surrounding communities.

Car seat installation checks will be available by appointment only through the Jenkins County Family Enrichment Center.

Because when it comes to our children, every ride should be a safe ride.

We’re proud to announce the installation of a new public Naloxone (Narcan) box in Millen, Georgia through a partnership with Georgia Overdose Prevention.

This is more than just a box on a wall—it’s a life-saving resource that helps make emergency overdose reversal medication available when every second counts.

This installation represents a significant community-level change. In fact, this is currently the only publicly accessible Narcan box between Augusta and Statesboro, helping fill a critical gap in access for our rural communities.

This project also puts Millen on Georgia’s digital overdose prevention map. Through the Georgia Overdose Prevention website, residents, visitors, and first responders can easily locate this Narcan box, ensuring this life-saving resource is accessible when it’s needed most. By being included on the statewide map, Millen is helping expand access to overdose prevention resources across rural Georgia.

Every life is worth saving, and by increasing access to Naloxone, we’re taking an important step toward preventing overdose deaths and creating a healthier, safer Jenkins County.

A sincere thank you to Georgia Overdose Prevention for partnering with us to make this possible. Together, we can reduce stigma, expand access to life-saving resources, and strengthen our community.
