November is National Adoption Month!
During this month, New Light is celebrating our amazing adoptive families and children!
Today, we'd like to honor the Miller family, who adopted their daughter Mikenna on April 1st, 2024.
Dustin and Alex married in 2013, always dreaming of their "perfect" family—you know the one: 3 kids playing on the tire swing in the front yard. After almost 10 years of trying to start a family with no luck, they began to talk alternative options, with adoption being near the bottom of that list. It wasn't off the table, but there were so many questions they had. When the Millers were approached by a close family friend regarding a child available for adoption the friend was fostering, they'd like to say it was an immediate decision, but like any big decision, it took time to talk and pray about it.
After conversation and prayer, they decided to take the leap and within a few days, the amazing adoption specialists from New Light were there to answer questions and provide comfort to clear away any doubts. The then-specialist-now-Adoption-Supervisor "...took a genuine interest in [their] family and [their] daughter" throughout the entire process of completing this forever family.
When asked what adoption means to the Millers, they shared, "Adoption has been the most beautiful thing we could have done. We were able to give our daughter the love and structure she deserves. I couldn’t imagine life without her and she was the piece our family had been missing for so long."
The Millers have not only gained their daughter, but also so many loving "bonus" family members from Mikenna's time in foster care—which really drives home the importance of the relationships children in foster care do and should continue to carrying, even after they've joined their forever families. They have learned that any selfishness you may have had in your life before adoption instantly goes away, because you're not only living for you and your spouse, but for a very deserving child.
"There has been no change that we view as a burden or something we may be missing. She was what had been missing."
In the Millers final words, "If youare interested in adoption, reach out to the incredible people at New Light or any other organization. The goal is to give these amazing kids a loving home that you can provide. Adoption has been the greatest thing we have ever done. She is our heart; she is our pride."
