Being in the know is critical when preparing for a disaster.

Be in the Know: Get Alerts. Sign up for your community’s warning system (ALERT). Disasters can happen suddenly, so it’s important to have multiple ways to get alerts. The Emergency Alert System (EAS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio also provide emergency alerts.

Be in the Know: Preparedness Starts at Home. Ready.Gov has resources to help keep you safe from disasters like floods and other natural and man-made hazards. But are you prepared for everyday injuries that can happen at home? Visit ready.gov/home-safety for tips what to do and have items on hand to help you understand how to react to injuries, stay safe, prevent further injury, and control pain in the injured individual.

Be in the Know: Common Household Injuries. Every year, millions of people seek medical attention after they’re injured at home, so it’s important to know what to do to keep yourself and your loved ones safe. Ready.gov has tips on how to prevent and treat common causes of injuries in the home, including falls, poisoning, and burns.

Be in the Know: Schools and Childcare. Protecting children is a parent’s number one priority and responsibility. Make sure you know the evacuation and reunification plans of your children’s school and childcare. Be sure these facilities have your most up to date contact information and know who should be contacted if you can’t be reached in an emergency.
