A patio doesn't fail in the middle. It fails at the edge first.

We wet set our borders into concrete instead of just chips, and mix fiber into that edge restraint. On the coast, ground freezes and thaws enough times a winter that a rigid edge eventually cracks. Fiber gives it just enough flex to survive the cycle instead of splitting.

It's a detail nobody asks about until their neighbor's border starts lifting.

Nobody posts a photo of the ten inches of dirt they dug out. That's the part deciding whether your patio is still flat in five years.

Geotextile fabric to separate the layers. Six inches of clean stone, compacted every two inches, not all at once. An inch of chip base set to pitch before a single paver goes down.

None of it shows up in the after photos. All of it is why the after photos still look good years later.

The weeds are not the problem. They're the symptom.

It comes back to the sand in the joints and whether it was installed right. Get that part correct and stay on top of the maintenance, and it doesn't happen.

One cracked stone is not a project.

That's the difference. A slab means taking out the whole pad. Here it's lifting one paver and setting a new one in its place.

Sealing is about what happens on top of the stone.

Dining table, grill, glasses of wine, it earns its cost. A space that won't see much of that, it doesn't. Same pavers either way.

Wiring is the part you cannot add later.

Everything runs under the stone. Once the pavers are set and the joints are sanded, adding a light means pulling pieces back up.

So the decision gets made at design, months before the first night you sit out there.

Another raised patio coming together in Millville by the Sea! 🌊

Day 2 progress: everything is excavated, the walls are built, and the caps are installed. Next up, we’ll finish the base and start laying pavers.

Final walkthrough in Dagsboro, Delaware 🔥
