Over the weekend, Chief Anthony Fama accepted a generous donation from Chiefs Chris and Tommy Grande and the East Brunswick District 2 Board of Commissioners: a 2014 Chevy Tahoe to replace Milltown Fire Department’s Car 83.

This donation exemplifies the true meaning of brotherhood and mutual aid—neighbors supporting neighbors and helping one another when the need arises. It is this spirit of cooperation and generosity that makes the fire service so special.

The Milltown Fire Department sincerely thanks Chiefs Chris and Tommy Grande and the East Brunswick District 2 Board of Commissioners for their generosity and continued support. We are proud to call you our neighbors and brothers in the fire service, and we are grateful for your help in keeping our department moving forward and our members equipped to serve our community.

We would also like to extend a sincere thank you to Lew Pinella for the excellent work he did striping and lettering our new Car 83. Your generosity, craftsmanship, and continued support of the Milltown Fire Department are truly appreciated.

The Milltown Fire Department invites the community to join us on Saturday, October 10th, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the firehouse for a fun and educational day for the entire family! Come visit the firehouse, meet our firefighters, and learn more about fire prevention and important safety practices that can help protect you, your family, and your home.

You’ll have the opportunity to check out our fire trucks and equipment, see live demonstrations, ask questions, and get a closer look at what our firefighters do when the alarm sounds. There will be plenty to see, learn, and experience, so bring the family and stop by! We look forward to seeing you at the firehouse!

A heartfelt thank you to Camillo and Maria’s Pizza for their generosity and for providing a meal to our hardworking firefighters. Your support means more than you may realize.

When severe weather is approaching, there is plenty to prepare for. Our members are busy making sure the trucks are fueled and ready, tools and equipment are checked, generators and other resources are operational, and everything is in place before the storm arrives. During that preparation, meals and taking care of themselves can often take a back seat.

That’s why the generosity of people like Camillo and Maria’s Pizza is so appreciated. You made sure our members had a hot meal while they were busy preparing to serve and protect our community.

Today, the Milltown Fire Department pauses to remember the 343 FDNY firefighters, 37 Port Authority Police officers, 23 NYPD officers, and 38 other first responders from various agencies who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001.

We remember the nearly 3,000 innocent people who lost their lives that day, and the countless families, friends, and communities forever changed by the events of September 11.

We remember their courage, their sacrifice, and their willingness to run toward danger while others were running away. Especially, FDNY Lieutenant Charles Garbarini.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, the call for help extended far beyond New York City. Fire departments and emergency services throughout the region received alerts for mutual aid as the FDNY faced an unprecedented citywide emergency following the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.

Milltown Ladder 73 responded with a crew of six: Captain Brian Bush, Senior Engineer Randy Micale, Lieutenant Paul Otterbine, and Firefighters Jerry Guthlein, Mark Petscavage, and Brian Kelly.

The crew initially reported to the Middlesex County Fire Academy, where they staged with other county resources while awaiting an assignment. Ladder 73 was ultimately assigned to Engine 225/Ladder 107 in Brooklyn, where the Milltown crew backfilled the empty firehouse and responded to calls throughout the East New York community, helping protect its residents while FDNY members continued their efforts at the World Trade Center.

Twenty-five years later, we remember the Milltown firefighters who did not hesitate to answer the alarm. They left their homes and families to stand beside their brother and sister firefighters in New York during one of the darkest days in our nation’s history.

We remember those who were lost.
We honor those who answered the call.
We stand with those who continue to carry their memory.

Twenty-five years later, we remember.

Monday Nights are Drill Night !!!

Monday night is still drill night, and while our members got a well-deserved break last night, the training never stopped. We took the opportunity to work with our cadet firefighters and focus on skills specifically designed to prepare them for the future.

Because of their age, cadet firefighters are restricted from participating in many of the everyday tasks that firefighters can perform after successfully completing the fire academy. Our cadet program is designed to bridge that gap by giving these young firefighters exposure to the skills, knowledge, teamwork, and physical demands they will encounter as they progress through the fire service.

One of those restrictions involves the use of SCBA. Cadets cannot operate on air during emergency operations, but under the direct supervision of our officers and in a controlled training environment, we can safely introduce them to the equipment and help them become comfortable working with an air supply.

Last night, our cadets participated in a basic search evolution using SCBA and smoked-out face masks. Following a charged hose line into a structure, each cadet conducted a search for a victim. After locating the victim, the cadet successfully removed and evacuated them from the building.

The evolution gave our cadets a better understanding of the challenges firefighters face in a smoke-filled environment, including limited visibility, navigating with a hose line, maintaining orientation, and learning to trust their equipment and air supply.

These hands-on experiences are an important part of preparing the next generation of firefighters. We are proud of the effort our cadets continue to put into their training and look forward to watching them develop their skills as they progress through the program.

Friday night, the South River Fire Department requested mutual aid support for their End-of-Summer Celebration. A crew, along with Engine 62, Utility 71, and Car 83, responded to provide fire protection and support to our neighboring community.

At the conclusion of the fireworks display, crews went to work checking brush areas and neighboring homes to ensure no hotspots or fires were started as a result of the fireworks. Several roofs were also wetted down as a precaution.

Utility 71 proved to be an extremely valuable resource, as its maneuverability allowed crews to access areas between the houses and effectively wet down several roofs without the need to deploy a supply line or establish a dedicated water source. This allowed several engines to remain in service and available for additional calls.

Events like this, as well as our own Fourth of July fireworks display, require a significantly larger presence from the fire service to ensure the safety of the community. We were proud to assist our neighbors in South River and happy to return the favor. Mutual aid and brotherhood are what make our fire service stronger!

Monday Nights are Drill Nights !!!

Monday our members spent the evening flowing some water.

The training began with members explaining and demonstrating the proper way to make a hydrant connection. Our cadet firefighters then put those lessons into practice by participating in hands-on evolutions, where they established a water supply from the hydrant.

Our pump operators also had the opportunity to flow water through the master streams and blitz fire monitor while gaining valuable experience operating the apparatus under flowing conditions.

Cadet firefighters were also introduced to master streams, learning about their purpose, effectiveness, and proper setup. Practical, hands-on training like this helps build the skills and confidence needed to operate safely and effectively on the fireground.

Utility 71, Engine 62, and Car 82 assisted East Brunswick Fire District 3 by providing standby coverage for the fireworks display at the Middlesex County Fair.

Large public events require extensive planning and coordination to ensure the safety of everyone in attendance. We are proud to work alongside our neighboring departments and remain committed to providing assistance whenever needed.
