Monday Nights are Drill Night !!!

Monday night is still drill night, and while our members got a well-deserved break last night, the training never stopped. We took the opportunity to work with our cadet firefighters and focus on skills specifically designed to prepare them for the future.

Because of their age, cadet firefighters are restricted from participating in many of the everyday tasks that firefighters can perform after successfully completing the fire academy. Our cadet program is designed to bridge that gap by giving these young firefighters exposure to the skills, knowledge, teamwork, and physical demands they will encounter as they progress through the fire service.

One of those restrictions involves the use of SCBA. Cadets cannot operate on air during emergency operations, but under the direct supervision of our officers and in a controlled training environment, we can safely introduce them to the equipment and help them become comfortable working with an air supply.

Last night, our cadets participated in a basic search evolution using SCBA and smoked-out face masks. Following a charged hose line into a structure, each cadet conducted a search for a victim. After locating the victim, the cadet successfully removed and evacuated them from the building.

The evolution gave our cadets a better understanding of the challenges firefighters face in a smoke-filled environment, including limited visibility, navigating with a hose line, maintaining orientation, and learning to trust their equipment and air supply.

These hands-on experiences are an important part of preparing the next generation of firefighters. We are proud of the effort our cadets continue to put into their training and look forward to watching them develop their skills as they progress through the program.

Friday night, the South River Fire Department requested mutual aid support for their End-of-Summer Celebration. A crew, along with Engine 62, Utility 71, and Car 83, responded to provide fire protection and support to our neighboring community.

At the conclusion of the fireworks display, crews went to work checking brush areas and neighboring homes to ensure no hotspots or fires were started as a result of the fireworks. Several roofs were also wetted down as a precaution.

Utility 71 proved to be an extremely valuable resource, as its maneuverability allowed crews to access areas between the houses and effectively wet down several roofs without the need to deploy a supply line or establish a dedicated water source. This allowed several engines to remain in service and available for additional calls.

Events like this, as well as our own Fourth of July fireworks display, require a significantly larger presence from the fire service to ensure the safety of the community. We were proud to assist our neighbors in South River and happy to return the favor. Mutual aid and brotherhood are what make our fire service stronger!

Monday Nights are Drill Nights !!!

Monday our members spent the evening flowing some water.

The training began with members explaining and demonstrating the proper way to make a hydrant connection. Our cadet firefighters then put those lessons into practice by participating in hands-on evolutions, where they established a water supply from the hydrant.

Our pump operators also had the opportunity to flow water through the master streams and blitz fire monitor while gaining valuable experience operating the apparatus under flowing conditions.

Cadet firefighters were also introduced to master streams, learning about their purpose, effectiveness, and proper setup. Practical, hands-on training like this helps build the skills and confidence needed to operate safely and effectively on the fireground.

On August 11, Ladder 73 was requested to respond to a cover assignment at North Brunswick Fire Company No. 1 while their members operated at a second-alarm structure fire.

Shortly after arriving at the cover assignment, Ladder 73 was reassigned to the scene to assist with overhaul operations in the basement division.

Engine 72 and crew were dispatched by the Middlesex County Fire Coordinators on August 9 at 2:21 a.m. to provide mutual aid coverage for Jamesburg. While units from the Jamesburg Fire Department operated at a structure fire on Front Street, Engine 72 and its crew stood by at Jamesburg Fire Headquarters to ensure continued fire protection coverage for the community.

Mutual aid responses such as these highlight the strong working relationships between neighboring fire departments and the importance of regional cooperation in providing uninterrupted emergency services to our communities.

Mondays are Drill Nights!!!

One of the most critical skills firefighters must master is the rescue of occupants from upper floors using ground ladders. During this Monday’s drill, members reviewed ladder placement, victim removal techniques, firefighter positioning, and effective communication to safely remove victims from windows and elevated locations. These evolutions require strength, coordination, and teamwork, as every movement must be deliberate to protect both the victim and the rescuers.

While ladder rescues are not performed on every fire scene, they remain an essential life-saving skill that must be practiced regularly. By training under realistic conditions, our members build the confidence and muscle memory needed to perform efficiently when seconds matter most. Continuous training ensures we are prepared to provide the highest level of service to our community when called upon.

This past Saturday, the Milltown Exempt Firemen’s Association held its quarterly meeting and annual clam bake. The afternoon brought together Ex-Chiefs and members of the association for a day of camaraderie, great food, and the opportunity to reconnect while sharing stories and memories from years of service to the Milltown community. As always, the gathering served as a reminder of the strong bonds and lifelong brotherhood that continue long after active service has ended.

During the meeting, we took time to recognize and honor one of our own. After more than four decades of dedicated volunteer service to the Borough of Milltown, Ex-Chief Brian Harto has officially hung up his bunker gear.

Throughout his distinguished career, Chief Harto served as Chief of the Department on three separate occasions while holding numerous other leadership positions over the years. His commitment to preserving the history and traditions of our department has been unmatched. He played an instrumental role in the operation of the Milltown Fire Department Museum and devoted countless hours to the maintenance and preservation of our cherished 1921 American LaFrance. His leadership, mentorship, knowledge, and unforgettable firehouse stories have influenced generations of firefighters and helped shape the department into what it is today.

No words can truly express our gratitude for everything Chief Harto has given to this department and our community. The best way we can honor his legacy is by continuing to serve with the same dedication, professionalism, and pride that he demonstrated throughout his remarkable career.

As a small token of our appreciation, Chief Anthony Fama presented Ex-Chief Harto with his fire helmet in recognition of 47 years of faithful service, leadership, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to the Milltown Fire Department and the residents of Milltown.

Thank you, Chief Harto, for your decades of selfless service. Your legacy will continue to inspire those who wear the Milltown Fire Department patch for generations to come.
