Last Wednesday morning, 26 Nute students gathered at the New Hampshire Farm Museum with teacher Christine Pratt for a community service project to remove invasive plants. Using loppers and hand saws, they cut bittersweet vines, barberry, burning bush, multiflora roses and more. MCC Board member Steve Panish helped organize and supervise the event. The Farm Museum contributed snacks and lunch. Kudos to all for getting so much accomplished in this great collaborative effort!

A new sign was installed today thanking all the organizations that contributed to the new box bridge on Sam Plummer Road. Also thanks to landowner Irene Gutowski (standing next to her brother) who allowed us to erect the sign on a tree on her land. Alena Warren from Strafford County Conservation District designed and mounted the sign, while Virginia Long held it in place. Afterwards, Alena examined the shrubs and small trees planted last year by Nute High School student as part of a community service project supervised by Christine Pratt. Most had survived the drought last year and looked to be sprouting new leaves. Their roots will hold the soil in place and prevent erosion into the stream that provides habitat, potentially for young brook trout as well as many other wildlife.

Bend down, look close... there are tiny spring wildflowers in bloom, and possibly egg masses in those pools that appear in your woods in springtime.
Anyone want to try identifying the flowers (3 photos) or the egg masses (1 photo)?

If you missed it, you can see it here: egg masses, owl pellets, little creeping creatures, beetles on the water, all showed up on a lovely spring morning for MCC's Vernal Pool Walk yesterday.
Many thanks to photographer Kate Wilcox for so many of these photos! Also to Kathy Moses for the last four pictures.

Yesterday, I was walking on a town conservation parcel to check out an invasive Phragmites infestation there and happened upon some great wildlife -- it's so nice to see turtles and turkeys again, each doing their spring thing!
