Family comes first at Touch-a-Truck, one of Milton’s most popular and family-friendly events. So it’s only appropriate that one of its top-level sponsors is all about helping people get the best possible value to get into their forever homes.

Give yourself a little extra time to circle the Hopewell-Thompson roundabout this week.

Crews have been busy there for several weeks adding modifications intended to make it safer for drivers to traverse this roundabout. Those measures – including concrete splitter islands, a mountable truck apron, reflective markers, and more – are now in place.

But there’s one more big thing happening this week: repaving. That work starts Wednesday with milling around the circle. Then on Thursday, crews expect to finish the job by paving. (And yes, weather and other factors could impact this timetable.)

This phase is critical, needless to say, and it will affect motorists. Plan for delays given that some areas will have to be shut down for travel at times. Flaggers will direct traffic accordingly. The work should be fined to normal construction hours of approximately 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There's still more to do after the paving is finished, so be prepared for potential delays into next week. (Still, this week's paving should be the most impactful on traffic.)

Something similar is happening -- on roughly the same timeframe -- down Hopewell Road at Bethany Bend, with safety countermeasures and more also being added there.

All this relates to the City’s Safety in Action initiative, for which roundabout safety was a focus. After collecting data at these two Hopewell intersections, more such modifications could be incorporated into other roundabouts around (pun intended!) Milton.

Your kids shouldn’t have to work on Labor Day. Instead, they should have fun – all the better if they’re making special, beautiful things.

Instructors from KidCreate, Milton Parks and Rec’s youth art program provider, will lead a special one-day camp on September 7 with this goal in mind. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. that Monday at Bethwell Community Center, participants will celebrate the holiday by making grill-inspired crafts and other creations.

Your child can make the most of the start of fall by going fishing.

No experience, no rod, and no bait necessary. We’ll supply the latter two for those 8-to-13-year-olds who come to Mayfield Park from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, September 23.

And, as this is a Beginner Fishing class, our very own “Ranger Jen” Young will share lessons, insights, and advice so your young one can have a great time learning and loving the outdoors. Past sessions have gotten rave reviews, and we’re sure this September 23 edition will as well.

Milton’s Design Review Board will meet Tuesday evening to conduct a pair of courtesy reviews – one related to a proposed garage addition in Crabapple, the other for a just over 1,600-square foot event space by the Alpharetta line.

The September 1 meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in City Hall’s Council Chambers. People can attend in-person or watch online at https://meetings.municode.com/MeetingDetailsPage/index?clientCode=MILTONGA&meetingId=69ae00f6-01f2-4b10-8eb8-99180b39e24c.

Consisting of seven individuals appointed by Milton’s Mayor and Councilmembers, the Design Review Board votes on demolition requests as well as makes recommendations to the City’s Community Development Director about new site development, new construction, and certain alterations to existing structures. The DRB, as this committee is known, is also part of Milton’s public meeting process – which means other boards may consider some of the same items.

Two courtesy reviews along those lines will take place on Tuesday. The first pertains to 115 Cannongate Court, a 2.3-acre property in the Kensington Farms neighborhood in Milton’s Crabapple area. The owner is requesting a variance to reduce the 60-foot minimum front yard frontage to 48.8 feet to accommodate expanding an existing garage from two to three bays.

The other Courtesy Review on the agenda relates to 631 North Main Street, which is in a commercial plaza near the Alpharetta border.

The applicant is seeking a Use Permit for an “Event Facility” for 1,625 square feet of space. It is part of an existing two-story, 38,000-square feet commercial building in an an area covered by the Deerfield Form-Based Code. If the permit is ultimately granted, this indoor space (in a suite near the middle of this building) may host gatherings such as corporate meetings, banquets, community get-togethers, and other private events for up to 90 people at a time.

After Tuesday’s meeting, the Design Review Board is next scheduled to convene on October 6.

Experience a fun, fall, family-friendly day next month on a Milton farm – and celebrate our community’s rich history while you do.

The Milton Historical Society’s annual Autumn Shindig returns to picturesque Wildberry Creek Farm the afternoon of Sunday, September 27. Attendees will enjoy delicious barbeque and beverages, rolling hayrides, and rollicking Bluegrass music. There will be special activities for kids (who are free with an adult if they’re under 12), as well as door prizes.

Of course, there also will be plenty of history to soak up through exhibits, reenactments, and more. Some will have an America 250 theme in conjunction with the United States’ milestone birthday year.

This is not a City event. Still, we’re happy to share the word for the Milton Historical Society, a non-profit that does a lot of good for our community.

Families, mark your calendars for September 12 when Touch-a-Truck – an event always packed with cool things to see, do, and enjoy – returns to Milton.

Between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on that Saturday, people can come to Stonecreek Church’s parking lot (13540 Highway 9) to explore various vehicles that can get you from here-to-there-to-everywhere. (Just before that, at 9 a.m., we'll also have a more subdued hour for sensory-sensitive attendees.) Just as exciting is the chance to see and sometimes step into what’s into these extraordinary pieces of equipment, not to mention to interact with those who spend time in them on a daily basis. This year, the latter can mean hobnobbing with Milton firefighters aboard its quint, police officers with their patrol cars and motorcycles, and EMTs who work inside ambulances.

While those First Responder vehicles are Touch-a-Truck staples, the overall line-up does change from year-to-year. The 2026 edition includes a:
• Mini Excavator
• Dump truck
• Garbage truck
• Archery trailer (containing everything an archer might need)
• Cement mixing truck and a cement pump truck
• Skid steer
• Ghostbusters car (hello Ecto-mobile!)
• Semi truck
• Pet transport van (featuring cute animals)
… and many, many more.

And to ratchet the atmosphere up another level, we’ll also have a hot air balloon up-and-around that will be sure to snare everyone’s attention.

But Touch-a-Truck is about more than just eyeing eye-catching vehicles. For instance, kids can test their gaming skills inside a video game truck. There will also be inflatables to jump on, face painters to beautify around people’s smiles, balloon twisting (including walking pet balloons), a caricature artist, and even a DJ making the vibes that much more lively.

All this fun can make you hungry, especially overlapping with the lunch hour. Good thing there will be food available from Echeri Kafe (a Mexican-inspired coffee-and-more truck), Fair on Wheels (with all-American carnival fare), Playa Bowls (with cool and healthy treats), and Taquero Mas (offering tacos, quesadillas, and other Mexican favorites). Those looking for something cooler and sweeter will have options thanks to King of Pops and Kona Ice.

An event like Touch-a-Truck happens because of contributions from vendors as well as members of our community. We in the City are particularly grateful to our great partners at Stonecreek Church for their collaboration and providing a home for this event. A big THANK YOU, too, to our sponsors. The late Dolly Parton may not have ever stepped foot in Milton proper over her 80 remarkable years. (If you did see her around here, let us know in the comments below.) But she certainly moved, entertained, and inspired many of us here.

For that reason, Milton joined communities nationwide this week in lowering flags outside City Hall and other City facilities to half-staff. They will remain so through September 1.

This is a small way for us and others across the country to pay tribute to a larger-than-life woman who made an immense impact with her music, kindness, charisma, business ventures, and philanthropy before her passing on Tuesday. While Parton called Tennessee home, she was no stranger to Georgia. She got married in Ringgold, launched her 2011 world tour at the then-Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Alpharetta on a sweltering August day, and last performed in the state at the then-Infinite Energy Arena in Duluth in 2016. That said, she touched many lives, and in many ways, throughout the Peach State beyond her concerts.

How can clients and outside professional service providers work together on pricing, to the mutual benefit of both sets of local businesses?

That was the focus of a gathering of dozens of local business leaders this week at City Hall, the latest meeting of the Milton Business Council.

The attendees were welcomed by Mayor Peyton Jamison, Councilmember Brian Dolan, and the City's Division Director of Economic Development Mark Farmer. Together, they drove home the vital point that all in attendance -- not to mention others in our local business community -- are welcome and supported by the City.

The Tuesday event's keynote speaker was John Ray, who gave a presentation on how to work with clients on utilizing and pricing professional services. He emphasized the importance of using value, rather than hourly rates, to get the most out of any agreement.
