In just over one week, the area in and around Broadwell Pavilion will be filled with costumed characters, carved pumpkins, and plenty more to see, do, and enjoy.

On Election Day --and really before then, since early voting already has started -- voters will cast ballots on a renewal of the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (TSPLOST), also referred to as TSPLOST III. If approved by Fulton County voters, this would collect 0.75% (3/4 cent) of sales taxes over five years to pay for transportation projects.

So what could it mean for Milton?

If approved, TSPLOST III is projected to bring in about $44 million to the City of Milton. Some specific projects will be determined in 2027 if the referendum passes. City Council did approve the broad parameters of improvement projects that would be covered by TSPLOST III, namely:
+ $15 million for operations and safety upgrades including corridor and intersection improvements
+ $10 million for maintenance and safety, most of that for road resurfacing
+ $10 million for bridge maintenance and replacement
+ $6.5 million for pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements including streetscape projects

While the vote takes place this fall, if it is approved, the new round of TSPLOST tax would start being collected on April 1, 2027. This would continue until early in 2032.

A big THANK YOU to Eagle Scout candidate Saavan Ghelani from the birds, park goers, nature lovers, and many more who appreciate the latest additions to Providence Park and Milton City Park and Preserve.

Those new improvements are the 15 bluebird boxes, shown here, that Saavan and his team built and installed a few weeks back at both those City parks. Each one can give these beautiful, cavity-nesting birds a safe place to lay their eggs and raise their young.

A member of Scout BSA Troop 841, Saavan worked hand-in-hand with Milton’s Parks and Rec team to devise the idea, maximize impact, and ultimately make a difference in supporting wildlife in these two parks. That’s a lot of work, but he’s not stopping there. Saavan plans to have another 45 such boxes that citizens can add for free to their own yards, likely distributing them sometime next spring (likely around Earth Day). Stay tuned for details!

There’s a new, better, safer way to walk between Crooked Creek and Bethany Bend along Highway 9.

Crews recently wrapped up work on the 5-foot-wide gravel path that’s now along this stretch. It’s in place of, well, the relative nothingness that existed there previously when people wore down weeds and grass walking in that area. The path sits in the Georgia Department of Transportation controlled right-of-way.

It is a placeholder, essentially, since something more permanent like a regular sidewalk could be built as part of Milton’s Highway 9 project. Something like that wouldn’t happen for years, but it is in the works. Until then, people have this good option that serves the same general purpose.

Part of New Providence Road will shut down in both directions for much of Friday for tree removal work.

The closure will be by the bridge spanning Cooper Sandy Creek, just south of the Mill Springs Academy entrance. The plan is for it to start around 9 a.m. and wrap-up by 2 p.m. on October 16 – meaning school bus routes and the like should not be impacted. (Note, as always for projects like these: Weather and other factors could alter this timeline.)

Still, regular drivers who would normally take New Providence Road all the way through will be affected. They should take alternate routes (and, as a result, give themselves a little more time to get wherever they need to go).

We apologize in advance for any inconvenience. That said, we expect shutting down the road for a few hours will prove the most time-efficient to get the needed work done – not to mention be appreciably safer.

Citizens are invited to learn about possibilities for Milton’s greenspaces as well as share their valuable opinions at a pair of input sessions later this month.

Both of these Greenprint Public Open Houses will feature enlarged visuals spread around City Hall’s Council Chambers showing ideas for what features could be incorporated into specific greenspaces. People can explore these boards, in several cases adding their own thoughts directly to them. They can also share their thoughts with and ask questions of City staff, who will be available to talk to around the room.

These open houses will happen at different times of day to better accommodate varying schedules. Specifically, they will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, and one week later from 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, October 27.

There will be no formal presentations. Rather, people are welcome to drop-in anytime over either of the two-hour windows to participate.

Gathered feedback can help inform the Greenprint, which will be a guiding document to identify the appropriate conservation approaches (including some areas potentially best suited to preservation with little or no alterations), potential uses, and improvements for the following City-owned greenspace properties:

• 104.8 acres off Bethany Road
• 21 acres at Freemanville and Birmingham roads
• 28 acres off Hamby Road
• 39 acres off Hopewell Road
• The 106-acre Lakhapani Preserve off Lackey Road
• Milton City Park and Preserve (focusing on the southern 65 acres and 12-acre former Kennedy property)
• 4.8 acres off Webb Road

The City began collecting data and reaching out to citizens for this project several years ago. More recently, this effort has been supported by the completion of the environmental assessment of select greenspaces and engagement with the Greenprint Steering Group – a representative group (not a Council-appointed committee) consisting of members of other relevant boards and committees.

The goal is for the Greenprint to serve as a useful roadmap for future City decisions. Still, any proponent’s inclusion in this document doesn’t ensure that it will move forward. Rather, any added elements will be independent projects with their own budget requirements, outreach, and public meetings at which feedback can be shared.

Milton’s first Wanderlust Food Truck Fest Crabapple will be happening soon in our downtown – times two.

From 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, you’ll find food trucks set up in Crabapple’s two anchor developments. One grouping will be in Market District Crabapple, with the other across Birmingham Highway and down Heritage Walk in Crabapple Market’s gravel parking lot.

With numerous trucks at those two locales offering an array of cuisines, you, your family, and your friends will have lots of delicious options to choose from. All are welcome with no admission fee; just pay for the food you want and enjoy!

Thursday’s festivities open the 2026 Wanderlust Food Truck Fest season in Milton, with similar events planned for October 29, November 12, December 3, and December 10. You and your family can attend a parade, festival, and spirited celebration all in one – all this Thursday evening, all outside Cambridge High School.

The school’s third annual JamBEARee returns from 5 to 8 p.m. on October 15, providing anyone the opportunity to be part of a very special and fun community. The past two editions of this free, family-friendly event have drawn more than 1,000 attendees apiece to kick off Cambridge’s homecoming weekend.

Festivities kickoff with carnival-style rides, food trucks, games, and activities by the football field. The Homecoming Parade itself will start around 5:45 p.m., with the evening capped off by a rally featuring Cambridge High’s band, cheerleaders, and dance team. Milton’s Planning Commission will hold a Special Called Meeting on Wednesday evening to consider an event facility Use Permit request and potential alterations to certain City code regarding AG-1 parcels.

The October 14 meeting will start at 6 p.m. in City Hall’s Council Chambers (2006 Heritage Walk). People can attend in-person or watch online at https://meetings.municode.com/MeetingDetailsPage/index?clientCode=MILTONGA&meetingId=11476d64-a0e0-4fe5-9109-7588b1f38e42.

Consisting of seven individuals appointed by Milton’s Mayor and Councilmembers, the Planning Commissions weighs in on variance and permit requests as part of the City’s public hearing process. This committee also evaluates and recommends changes to zoning ordinances, subdivision regulations, zoning maps, and overall planning processes.

The first item of note on Wednesday’s agenda is an application for a Use Permit for an Event Facility at 631 North Main Street, located in a commercial plaza near the Alpharetta border.

The applicant wants a Use Permit for 1,625 square feet of space near the middle of an existing two-story, 38,000-square feet commercial building that falls within the Deerfield Form-Based Code. If granted, it would allow gatherings in that suite such as corporate meetings, banquets, community get-togethers, and other private events for up to 90 people at a time.

The PC agenda’s other item (RZ26-05) outlines potential text amendment to the City’s Unified Development Code regarding AG-1 lots and development standards.

In January 2026, the City Council enacted a moratorium to give time to undertake a comprehensive analysis of small lot development and applicable regulations. That led to the City Council’s adoption on April 13 of several measures that address the relationship between how land is divided and how it ultimately functions. The items on this Planning Commission agenda represent Phase 2 in this process. If ultimately adopted, they would:
• Update the application of lot coverage standards to provide an option for lots subject to a 20% maximum lot coverage requirement to increase lot coverage based on the establishment of a conservation easement
• Make minor revisions to clarify the application of existing provisions and establish a 20-foot natural area temporary construction setback along perimeter property lines of newly created lots that abut existing properties outside a subdivision or minor plat
• Increase the setback requiring swimming pools (and associated decks and equipment) be at least 10 feet from an adjacent property line to at least 20 feet from rear and side property lines
• Adjust the requirements for 3-plus acre lots when calculating buildable area where large lots are not penalized (this proposal does not impact lots less than three acres)

After this meeting, the Planning Commission is next scheduled to convene on October 28 for a Regular Meeting.

One-hour in Milton’s upcoming self-defense class can save many hours of physical and psychological pain.

Presented by the City’s partners from the Mighty Hands Foundation, this class gives participants ages 12-and-older the opportunity to learn and practice fundamental Gracie Jiu-Jitsu-based techniques such as defensive position and practical escapes (i.e. trap and roll, grip breaks, and standing escapes). In addition to these practical responses, there’s also a big focus on awareness and prevention.

The next session (they occur once a month) is from 3-4 p.m. on Sunday, October 18, at Bethwell Community Center.
