Milton Fire Department

Milton Fire Department The Milton Fire Department is a volunteer/paid on call organization for the Town of Milton, Vermont.

Currently we have one (1) part-time employee, forty (40) volunteer firefighters and ten (10) cadets. On January 27, 2003 we moved into our new station at 47 Bombardier Road. This is a twelve thousand (12,000) square foot state-of-the-art facility, which was completed on time, and within budget. It is home to eight (8) pieces of apparatus, two (2) boats and a hazardous materials (HAZMAT) trailer. W

e are very proud of this facility and thankful for the support of the Fire Station Project. On June 30, 2003 an era in our Fire Department history ended with the merging of the Village and Town governments. For the last sixty-six (66) years the Village government operated the Fire Department with financial support from the Town. This transition has been very smooth and has enabled the Department to work more closely with all the other Town Departments to make this community a safer place for all to live. The Department responds to approximately 140 calls per year. In addition to fire calls, the Department also responds to HAZMAT incidents, water rescue and basic vehicle extrication calls. The Department meets on Monday evenings at 7:00 PM at the Fire Station. The first Monday of each month is a business meeting and the second and third Mondays are training sessions.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of firefighter Charlie Hurley, a devoted firefighter whose service to the Milton Fire Department began in 1974. Charlie journey in the fire service started at the Rutland City Fire Department and continued in Milton, where Charlie responded to countless emergencies with unwavering commitment.

Charlie was heavily involved in the Franklin County Firefighters Association, representing Milton Fire Department. He was also instrumental in acquiring Milton’s first aerial apparatus—a previously owned ladder truck from Saint Albans City Fire Department. Charlie continued to grow our aerial apparatus division, later acquiring a decommissioned 1980 Baker Aerialscope tower truck from FDNY. With Charlie’s talents, this truck was completely refurbished and served our community for many years.

Charlie’s passion for the fire service, steadfast service, and devotion to protecting others will be remembered with deep gratitude and respect. Charlie leaves behind a lasting legacy within the Milton Fire Department and the communities he served.

Members of the Milton Fire Department past and present would like to express our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the Hurley family, thank you for allowing Charlie to be part of our lives, he will forever be remembered.

Respectfully submitted,
Chief Chris Poirier

On April 7th, it was an unusual morning for Milton, with two separate incidents involving school buses occurring within just one hour.
At 7:37 a.m., crews were dispatched to a two-vehicle crash on Railroad Street involving a car and a school bus. Upon arrival fire personnel, determined that no further response was needed, and all Milton Fire units were placed back in service.
Then, at 8:29 a.m., members were dispatched again—this time to Cobble Hill Road—for an incident involving another school bus and utility wires, with students still on board. Initial reports indicated that wires were on the bus and that there may be damage to the roof, making it unsafe for students to exit.
Upon arrival, crews determined that a low-hanging telecommunications line due to a tree branch had been struck by the bus. When the line snapped, it became entangled with an electrical wire on the pole. Damage to the bus was limited to the emergency exit hatch on the roof.
Fire personnel remained on scene until a replacement bus and school staff arrived to assist with the transition. Fire members provided a personal es**rt for each student to the new bus before continuing on their way to school.
Milton Fire units then cleared the scene and returned to quarters after about 1 hour.

NEWS RELEASE
Milton Fire Department – Locomotive Fire Incident

Date/Time: Sunday, March 8, 2026, approximately 10:55 p.m.

Location: McMullen Road / Winter Lane railroad crossing, Town of Milton

Incident Summary:
At approximately 10:55 p.m. on Sunday, March 8, 2026, the Milton Fire Department, with assistance from the Milton Rescue Department and Milton Police Department, responded to a reported locomotive fire at the McMullen Road and Winter Lane railroad crossing.

Upon arrival, responding units identified significant fire involvement within the second locomotive unit positioned directly behind the lead engine. Active fire was observed in the engine compartment, with flames venting vertically an estimated 15–20 feet above the locomotive. Initial size‑up and investigation determined the fire originated from a mechanical failure of the diesel engine, resulting in the release of an undetermined quantity of lubricating oil into the exhaust manifold and adjacent engine room components.

As a result of the mechanical failure, the diesel engine entered a runaway condition, operating at elevated RPMs and initially unable to be shut down through standard controls. The locomotive engineer and conductor implemented emergency shutdown procedures, including activation of systems to terminate fuel flow to the affected engine. After a brief interval, engine RPMs decreased and the unit shut down, allowing fire suppression operations to proceed safely.

Fire crews completed extinguishment, confirming the incident was confined to the engine room and roof‑mounted exhaust manifold. No extension beyond the second locomotive unit was identified.

The train, owned and operated by New England Railway, was traveling southbound and transporting tanker cars containing hazardous flammable materials. The tanker cars were positioned behind five boxcars, providing separation from the three locomotive units. At no point was the fire at risk of extending to the tanker cars.

According to statements from the engineer and conductor, a bright flash and loud noise were observed while traversing the railroad street crossing. Initially suspecting a vehicle strike, they subsequently identified active fire in the second locomotive. The engineer reduced speed and brought the train to a controlled stop at the next crossing to facilitate safe access for emergency responders. Emergency braking systems were secured and fuel systems isolated prior to fire department operations.

The Milton Fire Department acknowledges the prompt and appropriate actions taken by the train crew, which contributed significantly to scene safety and effective incident mitigation.

Additional Responding Agencies:
Georgia Fire Department
Fairfax Fire Department
Colchester Fire Department
Green Mountain Power

Note to community members: “although these incidents are rare, Milton emergency service departments conduct annual training to respond to railroad-related emergencies in our community. Last night’s events demonstrate that preparedness.”

It's Daylight Savings time! It's 2026, and most of your clocks probably changed themselves, BUT your smoke and CO alarms probably didn't change their own batteries this morning. That means its your turn!
While you're there, it's a great chance to check the manufactured date on your detectors - If that date is more than 10 years on a smoke detector, or 5 on a CO detector, it's time to consider replacement for that device.

Members met tonight for our monthly business meeting and equipment inspection. Before we got to work, our friends from Huddy's Bagels, on behalf of Backing the Brave joined us to present an amazing plaque and mountainous platters of treats for everyone and some kind words of gratitude.
They were invited to stay for the meeting to get a glimpse into the behind the scenes work we do, and are grateful for the time. Come back and see us anytime! Thanks for being part of our community, and all of the great causes you support.

Our 9th year of Operation FireCuffs has come and gone! This event, now in its 15th year brought more joy and cheer to the Children's Hospital than ever before. We couldn't do this without the support of our residents, several local businesses in town, and members who take time out of their days to participate in this great toy drive!
We stuffed an engine again this year (next year, we're going for two), and it's a true testament to the caring community we live in... even if the Lieutenant did have to give up his seat to give Champ a ride to the hospital.
