General Stannard House & Park

General Stannard House & Park Park is site of Stannard's post-Civil War farmstead, house currently stored for future restoration. We need your help to make this project a reality. Give today!

Built c. 1840, the General Stannard House is located at 947 Route 7 South in Milton, Vermont. Civil War General George Stannard had a crucial contribution to the Union victory at Gettysburg and the preservation of the American United States, in stopping Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg. The General Stannard House Committee is a community non-profit group sponsored by the Milton Historical Society, a

501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We are seeking to restore the the house and bring it back intoo use. Visit the Mission and Vision page of our web site for details. http://www.generalstannardhouse.org/donate.html

He lived in the house after the war in the late 1860s-early 1870s, and raised horses and cattle while also operating a brick foundry in St. Albans. Despite occasional efforts to repurpose the house, it has been vacant for about 25 years. In 2013, a group of Milton Historical Society members and other citizens took renewed interest in restoring the house and returning it to public use. In July 2014, the General Stannard House Committee was formed, with this Mission:

- to stabilize, preserve and honor the General George Stannard House on Route 7 in Milton.
..and this Vision:

- to rehabilitate and repurpose the house to honor General Stannard’s crucial contribution to the Union victory at Gettysburg and the preservation of the American United States. Visioned Uses for repurpose could be:
- Welcome Center to Milton, with information facilities for the area, especially the Lake Champlain Byway
- Recreational rest stop for bicyclists
- Civil War historic site highlighting historical appreciation of General Stannard’s crucial victory in stopping Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg, ensuring a Union victory
- ADA connections and applicability to Stannard’s “One-armed man farm”
- Art Center for the area; rotating gallery

- and more! Current next steps (Summer 2014) are:

- Putting together uses, getting community (and State) agreement.

In time for Vermont's foliage visitors, thank you to Milton High School students Hayden Atherton, Keegan Jones, Parker Keniston and Collin St. Hilaire for sprucing up the Stannard Park a couple of Fridays ago, during MHS' annual Day of Service!

The park is located at 951 Route 7 South at Milton's southern gateway, the site of Gen. George Stannard's post-Civil War farmstead. Stannard ordered the pivotal flanking maneuver at Gettysburg that repulsed Pickett's Charge, leading to union victory in the battle. His barn at this site was built to accommodate the needs of a one-armed man, which he lost in battle at Fort Harrison in 1864.
