Get inspired for this weekend by listening to our own City Clerk Jim Owczarski talking about our amazing City Hall and the largest common council chamber in North America.
Mayor Cavalier Johnson presented his 2024 city budget in the common council chamber at City Hall this morning.
I presented my 2024 city budget this morning. It is a $1.9-billion plan that makes careful investments in important priorities. The previous trend of service cuts and draws on our reserves is behind us. Our new direction takes us on a path toward fiscal stability.
We focus our attention on our deferred capital investments, our employee compensation shortfalls, and our diminished reserves.
My budget doubles funding for demolition, and, rather than just relying on outside contractors to raze houses that are beyond rehabilitation, a new team at our department of Public Works will be added to the effort. And, more than demolition, we prioritize redevelopment that strengthens neighborhoods.
My budget funds the popular High Impact Paving program at the highest level ever. And we continue to invest in reckless driving reduction with physical changes to our streets.
There is no higher priority than increasing public safety. And we are making notable progress in reducing serious crime. Last year, the numbers of both property crimes and violent crimes went down. This year, positive trends continue.
The 2024 budget I am submitting includes staffing increases in the police department and in the fire department. We are fully complying with this portion of Act 12.
Next year our residents will see more firefighting resources, an additional paramedic unit and an additional fire engine. With the police officers we are adding, I want prompt responses to reported crime, and additional efforts to keep crime from occurring.

Check out the Hoan Bridge in purple for National Overdose Awareness Day.
🔮 Illuminating the Night for National Overdose Awareness Day! Tonight and tomorrow, the Hoan Bridge will be lit purple, a powerful symbol of our commitment to raising awareness about the overdose epidemic.
National Overdose Awareness Day is a global event held on August 31st each year to raise awareness about drug overdose, remember those who have lost their lives due to overdose, and support those who have been affected by this tragic issue. The day aims to reduce the stigma surrounding drug overdose and addiction while promoting resources for prevention, harm reduction, and treatment.
Tonight is an opportunity for communities to come together, show solidarity with individuals and families impacted by overdose, and advocate for policies and initiatives that can help prevent future overdoses.
Together, we can shatter the stigma surrounding addiction and work towards a future where every individual receives the support they deserve. 💜🌆
Please check out RISE Drug Free MKE for info on community events happening.

AIR QUALITY ADVISORY: A statewide air quality advisory will be in effect from Thursday, Aug. 17 at 6 a.m. through Monday, Aug. 21 at 6 a.m. Follow the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for updates.
8/18/2023 4:06 P.M. UPDATE: This air quality advisory will be canceled at 11 p.m. CDT tonight, 8/18 and no longer in effect. People with heart or lung disease, older adults and children should still reduce prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors if possible.
--------------
Another round of wildfire smoke from western Canada will be impacting air quality across Wisconsin for the next several days.
That means a statewide air quality advisory will be in effect from Thursday, Aug. 17 at 6 a.m. through Monday, Aug. 21 at 6 a.m., as the air quality index is expected to range from the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (Orange) level to the Unhealthy (Red) level.
During the advisory, we recommend that everyone keep outdoor activities short and light.
People with heart or lung disease, older adults, children and outdoor workers should avoid prolonged or heavy exertion and consider moving activities indoors.
Watch for symptoms like coughing or shortness of breath, as that is a sign to take it easier or move indoors.
And remember, the best way to prevent breathing particles from wildfire smoke is to stay indoors.
The situation will remain dynamic throughout the weekend, and conditions could change rapidly. Stay up-to-date on air quality conditions in your area and check out this infographic for recommendations to protect yourself from wildfire smoke.
