The National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) released its “Fatal Firefighter Injuries in the U.S. in 2025” report today, which showed that a total of 83 U.S. firefighters died while on-duty, or as a result of heart attacks, strokes, or medical conditions within 24 hours of duty, in 2025. This number reflects a 17 percent increase over the 69 fatalities reported in 2024, with the majority of the on-duty fatalities (65, or 78 percent of the total) resulting from traumatic injuries, heart attacks, or medical conditions. The remaining 18 fatalities involved heart attacks while firefighters were off duty but occurred within 24 hours of on-duty activity. (Prior to 2022, deaths that occurred within 24 hours of duty were not included in this study unless the injury occurred while the victim was on duty or indicated not feeling well while on duty.)

The fire service mourns the loss of the three firefighters who responded to the Knowles Fire in western Colorado over the weekend. Each life lost hurts our community as a whole. Our sincerest condolences go out to all that have been impacted, and we wish you comfort and solace during this difficult time.

MESA COUNTY, Colo. — Federal wildland fire officials are releasing the identities of three firefighters who died while responding to the Knowles Fire in western Colorado on Saturday.

The firefighters were assigned to the Rifle Helitack crew and were engaged in initial attack operations on the Knowles Fire when the incident occurred.

The brave and tireless work of American search and rescue teams continues. Today, Virginia Task Force 1 Urban Search and Rescue saved three more lives from collapsed residential buildings in Venezuela.

Along with Virgina, Metro departments - Los Angeles County Fire Department's international Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team, known as USA-2, was activated by the U.S. Department of State and deployed to Venezuela; Miami-Dade Fire Rescue's Florida Task Force 1 ( ) and the City of Miami Fire Rescue's Florida Task Force 2 (FLTF2) have been federalized and deployed to Venezuela.
