An undated image of the car ferry Milwaukee (Image Source: University of Wisconsin Madison Libraries Digital Collection – The Great Lakes Maritime History Project).

The photograph is part of the State of Wisconsin Collection at UW Madison. Photographer and location information not included in the accompanying notes. Based the vessel’s history (see below), the image is circa 1908-1929.

According to a source, the presence of an enclosed pilothouse and seagate in this image helps to date it. The seagate was added no earlier than 1911, and its believed the upper pilot house was enclosed at much later date possibly about 1920.

Additional Historical Information

Launched in 1903, what would become the car ferry Milwaukee (II) was built in Cleveland, Ohio by the American Ship Building Co. for the Manistique, Marquette & Northern Railroad Co. The 358-foot vessel (LOA) was christened the Manistique, Marquette & Northern No. 1.

The ship was designed to carry railroad cars and passengers. In addition to cross-lake ferry service, it was also used for passenger excursions. On Jan. 5, 1908, the vessel was damaged when it hit the breakwater in Manistique, Mich. while maneuvering in ice.

The steamer managed to get to the Chicago Lumber Co. dock before sinking. Three days later, it was raised and towed to South Chicago, Ill. for repairs. Later that same year, the vessel was sold to the Grand Trunk Milwaukee Car Ferry Co. and renamed the Milwaukee (II).

On Oct. 22, 1929, the ship was enroute from Milwaukee to Muskegon, Mich. with 47 crew and passengers on board. After encountering a gale, it foundered with no survivors. The wreck site was discovered in 1972 about seven miles northeast of Milwaukee in 120 feet of water.

The ship’s stern seagate is bent leading to the belief that it was damaged during the storm, allowing water to enter the hull and engine room. The wheelhouse appears to have been sheared off when the vessel sank and now rests about 100 feet from the rest of the wreck. Some rail cars are reportedly still onboard.

TBT- Did you know David Hasselhoff was a member of the Auxiliary?

During Baywatch’s television run from 1989 to 2001, Hasselhoff helped the Auxiliary to create PSAs on water safety. He even featured a number of USCG vessels in the show throughout its run.

In 1997, Hasselhoff was made an honorary Commodore for his work alongside the Auxiliary. Let us know if you've watched Baywatch and spotted any USCG vessels in any episodes!

Do you know how the Auxiliary first began?

Can you name our founder?

Our founder's initial idea for the Auxiliary formed when he requested that the Coast Guard inspect his vessel, a similar yacht to the one pictured here, for his upcoming trip from Los Angeles to Catalina Island in 1934. He recognized the opportunity of boaters across the nation to aid the Coast Guard's mission, and without his passion for pursuing such a project as recruiting civilian personnel to do so, the Auxiliary would likely not be here today as it is.

Check in later today to see if you answered correctly.

USCG Auxiliary 9th District Western Region (9WR) DTRAIN: held their annual training conference this weekend. Auxiliary members learned of program updates and operational skills to better support Coast Guard missions. They also held the district board meetings, the election of officers and engaged in fellowship and camaraderie with partner organizations.

This is the first in person DTRAIN since 2019 (last few were virtual due to COVID). We bid congratulations to COMO (Commodore) Randall as he nears the completion of his term as D9WR Commander and congratulations to COMO (elect) Thatch on his election to the position!
