Dear Friends,

As Spring comes into full bloom, we are reminded that this is a time for new beginnings. After 2020, we are all overdue for a time to begin anew!

While we know the global pandemic is still raging and the struggles for racial justice did not start with the murder of George Floyd, there are sprouts of hope and evidence that the arc of history can bend towards the light: towards recovery and renewed focus on racial justice. Every day, Volunteers of America MN/WI is generating light for the individuals we serve and for the communities in which we live. We are committed to the long haul. And, we welcome this moment to immerse in Spring!

Volunteers of America MN/WI has been on the front lines throughout the challenges of the last year. We celebrate with you as we watch vaccines go into arms and people get together with friends, learning how to hug again. It is refreshing to watch our connections with each other form new buds and blossom.

We celebrate 125 years of service and recognize that our work to help connect people with possibility is only just beginning. With your support and engagement, over 22,000 people came closer to that connection this past year. Thank you! As we begin to dig out from the past year’s extraordinary challenges, we continue to reach out in compassion for all that remains unfinished in the struggle for true well-being. Please join us.

I look forward to meeting you in person soon. Until then, please take a moment to renew your sense of hope, joy and wonder in the beauty of Spring.

Best always,
Julie Manworren

Three VOA MN/WI Recognized with Leadership Awards

We were honored this week when Volunteers of America presented three awards to us, recognizing our extraordinary leaders!

Our Racial Justice and Spiritual Care Director Laura Thelander was honored with the Leadership in Ministry award for her work providing hope, spiritual guidance, healing, and accountability that his rooted in her faith in a loving God.

Community Justice Senior Director Chris Doege was honored with the Leadership in Program Management award. Chris’s leadership and the Community Justice team saved lives when civil unrest threatened the home and safety of the residents at Lake Street Residential Reentry Center.

Amicus Reconnect Manager Mary Maas was the well-deserving recipient of the
Leadership in Direct Client Services award. Mary has dedicated much of her life to prison ministry and has worked in Amicus’s Reconnect program for 20 years. She is well-known by people seeking a second chance and those that serve them; when someone is leaving incarceration, they are often given one piece of advice: “go see Mary Maas!”

Congratulations to Laura, Chris, and Mary! Thank you all for exemplifying the VOA MN/WI values!

Volunteers of America (VOA) condemns the rise in hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the U.S. According to Stop AAPI Hate's recently released report, Asians were targeted in nearly 3,800 hate incidents in the past year. Stop AAPI Hate was formed in March of last year to prevent discrimination during the coronavirus pandemic.

Volunteers of America stands with the Asian American community and all disenfranchised and marginalized communities that have experienced racism, hate, and discrimination. We strongly condemn racism in all forms and we remain steadfast in our commitment to create a world of greater justice and hope for all.

Our hearts go out to the families and communities of those who have been harmed or have lost their lives from hate crimes and discrimination. We stand with the Asian American and Pacific Islanders community and all others to stop hate.

Today is officially VOA Day in Wisconsin! Thank you, Governor Tony Evers, for helping us celebrate this special day!

For 125 years, we've worked to close the gaps between people and possibility by providing health and human services to over 25,000 people a year in 110 neighborhoods and communities across Minnesota and Wisconsin. We look forward to continuing the VOA tradition of "going wherever we're needed and doing whatever comes to hand."

Donate to Volunteers of America - Volunteers of America

While it served those in need, Volunteers of America consciously engaged the wealthy and powerful in its mission. Ballington Booth’s personal address book was filled with names from the business, political, and social elite: Theodore Roosevelt, William Jennings Bryan, Bernard Baruch, John D. Rockefeller, and John Wanamaker, to name a few.

Influential friends were organized in national and local societies called Defender’s Leagues. Private giving from these supporters was the main source of funds in this era before government support of human services.

Today, you don’t have to be wealthy our powerful to support our lifesaving work. You can make a donation of any amount to make a difference: https://bit.ly/VOAMNWI-Donate

Despite challenging times, we still believe in building communities where all lives are uplifted. Your contribution ensures that we will stay on the frontlines of service.

We’re even in the music scene…kinda. The title track of Jefferson Airplane’s 1969 album Volunteers was inspired by the lead singer being awoken by a Volunteers of America truck picking up furniture. Our name is repeated in the chorus!

Did you know that we assisted during disasters such as the San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906 by setting up a special train to take orphaned children to safety? As our founders said, “We will go wherever we are needed.” We continue that tradition today as we’ve responded to the needs of our community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

To learn more about how we’ve responded, take a look at our Fall 2020 Newsletter: https://bit.ly/3cM5Dis

Our co-founder, Maud Booth, was an extraordinary woman and we are delighted to highlight her on the first day of Women’s History Month!

Dubbed “Little Mother of the Prisons,” she pioneered the Volunteer Prison League, which provided support for people in prison and helped them re-enter society. During her years of service, she also campaigned against corporal punishment, prolonged solitary confinement, and other abuses in the prison system. In the image below, she is seen with the Acting Warden at San Quentin.

Volunteers of America continues to provide reentry services to people seeking second changes today. We are dedicated to continuing Maud’s legacy 125 years later! #125yearsstrong #WomensHistoryMonth
