Minnesota nonprofits getting creative to crawl out of COVID-19 financial hole

We're proud that President & CEO Julie Manworren was featured as one of the many creative leaders in the Minnesota nonprofit community who are responding to the pandemic.

"When something shakes your world, whether that's a global pandemic or seeing someone killed on the streets, it's a hard pill to swallow," Manworren said. "But there are gifts that come from that... I think radical collaboration is going to be one of the net results of both of these stressors" she said.

The coronavirus has wreaked havoc for the nonprofit world, from large health systems to small arts and social service agencies and colleges. These organizations must now figure out how to rebuild after vaccines allow public spaces to open and people form new habits.

“I wouldn’t have made it without Dorothea,” Anthony said. “Our family wouldn’t have made it.”

In thousands of homes, daughters, sons, and friends are devoting much of their lives to providing for a loved one who is suffering from dementia or another debilitating illness. It’s a heart-rending 24-hour job that few people who aren’t experiencing it truly understand. But who cares for the caregivers? We do.

Anthony, his wife Donna, and his sister Rochelle have been caring for their mom, Odester, who has been suffering a slow decline from Alzheimer’s. Over a decade ago, Anthony met Dorothea Harris, director of our Culturally Responsive Caregiver Support and Dementia Services.

“Any resources we needed, call Dorothea,” Anthony recalled. “’I might not know the answer but hold on. I’ll get you the answer,’ she’d say. She would always point us in the right direction.”

"This is what keeps me going." That's how one resident at Lyndale Manor recently described his daily supply of meals from our Senior Nutrition Program.

When some organizations were shutting down their services because of COVID, Senior Nutrition staff knew their work was lifesaving and even shifted some of their services toward the community residents who were most vulnerable in the face of the pandemic, older adults and people with disabilities.

We started serving one 85-year old man when the meal service at another community organization closed because of COVID-19. He suffers from chronic bronchitis and can barely reach down to pick up his meals. He doesn’t have much money so the meals from Senior Nutrition make his food dollars go farther. Just as importantly, staff connect with him when they set up meals and can make sure he’s okay.

Through the Banks of the Red Cedar Trailer - YouTube

The Big Ten Network broadcast premiere of a documentary featuring former long-time VOA MN/WI Board Member Gene Washington, “Through the Banks of the Red Cedar” is on November 10 at 7:00 p.m. CST.

As former Board Member, we've always known Gene as a compassionate, insightful, community-driven, and giving man. But you may know him because in the 1960's and 1970's he was a legendary football player with the Minnesota Vikings. We are so proud that Gene is a part of our VOA MN/WI community and we look forward to watching the broadcast of his and Maya's documentary!

2020 has been a year that will change our society on a fundamental level and VOA MN/WI is changing right alongside the communities we work to uplift.

As you read through our abbreviated Fiscal Year 2019 Annual Report, we ask you to use this lens: the people, the services, the need and the commitment that you see in 2019 are still out there today. We're working more compassionately, we're showing more integrity and we will persevere. We have done so for nearly 125 years and no pandemic will change that.

We believe in the possibility of a brighter tomorrow and we will share in the work that the people of today are undertaking in its creation.
- Julie Manworren, President and CEO
