By the time the Six Triple Eight arrived in Europe, some American soldiers had been waiting months for a letter from home.

Warehouses were overflowing with undelivered mail. Packages and letters were stacked to the ceilings. Some bore common names with no identifying information. Others were addressed to men who had been transferred, wounded or killed.

In 1945, the Army handed the crisis to 855 Black women.

The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, known as the Six Triple Eight, was the only predominantly Black Women's Army Corps unit sent overseas during World War II.

Their motto was simple: "No mail, low morale."

Working around the clock in eight-hour shifts, seven days a week, they created an enormous tracking system containing millions of information cards to determine where service members had gone. They processed mail for more than seven million Americans serving in Europe.

They had been given six months to clear the backlog.

They did it in three.

After completing their work in Birmingham, England, the battalion moved to Rouen, France, where another mountain of mail awaited them. Photographs from Rouen capture something the statistics don't: these women laughing, eating and relaxing together at their own snack bar between shifts.

They were serving a country whose military was still segregated.

They faced racism from fellow Americans even while doing work the Army desperately needed.

Yet millions of letters finally reached soldiers because these women refused to let the mail stop.

For someone at war, an envelope from home wasn't just paper.

Sometimes it was proof that the life they were fighting to return to was still there.

Who is the real super-power:

In Germany, less than 0.1% of people are uninsured — about 72,000 people.
In the USA, about 8% are uninsured — roughly 27 million people.
