Today we recognize Juneteenth and celebrate Black freedom, resilience, culture, and achievement. Juneteenth serves as both a celebration and a reminder of our nation's history. It invites us to reflect on the ongoing work of advancing equity, expanding opportunity, and building communities where everyone has the resources and support, they need to thrive. At Community Advocates, we honor the generations of Black leaders, activists, families, and neighbors whose contributions have strengthened our community. While the offices are closed, Community Advocates will be sharing resources and information at the Juneteenth celebration today -- stop by and say hello!

Community Advocates will be closed on Friday, June 19 to observe Juneteenth. However, our 24-hour programs will remain open — the Milwaukee Women's Center Emergency Shelter and the Autumn West Safe Haven. Community Advocates is proud to participate in Milwaukee's Juneteenth Day Celebration, one of the nation's longest-running Juneteenth traditions. Join us on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive as we celebrate community, culture, resilience, and liberation alongside our neighbors. If you are experiencing a domestic violence issue, please call our 24/7 Domestic Violence Crisis Line at 414-671-6140. If you need help with your basic needs over the holiday weekend, please contact IMPACT 211.
We will be back in touch on Monday, June 22.

At the Milwaukee Women’s Center, meals help anchor the day. Breakfast and lunch are made available in the morning and midday. Dinner is served in shifts, signaling that the evening is wrapping up.

For five years, the kitchen has been led by PJ, who prepares dinner each evening. His approach is simple bit intentional—cooking from scratch when he can, adjusting menus based on weather, and creating meals that feel familiar.

As the Baby Boomers age and housing prices rise, more seniors will be facing housing insecurity and homelessness. That's why Community Advocates and Medical College of Wisconsin partnered, with Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Endowment support, to hear from elders with housing challenges in Milwaukee County. The result? Safe, stable, and age-appropriate housing is critical to the health and well-being of elders -- and we need to do more to provide this in our community. Learn more about our work here:

Did you know: elder abuse doesn't always show up the way we think. Older folks can be victimized by people they think they can trust, including relatives or caregivers. Abuse can be physical, financial, intimate, or social. In the 1990s, the Milwaukee Women's Center pioneered the Older Abused Women's Program to help older women who experience abuse, sometimes for decades. If you need help, please call the MWC's 24-hour hotline at 414-671-6140.

Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who might be experiencing a mental health challenge or is in crisis.

Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders.

This training, hosted by Community Advocates Public Policy Institute, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on June 25 at Kuumba Cafe, 274 E. Keefe Ave., Milwaukee. Register at https://ppi.communityadvocates.net/news-events/event-calendar.html/event/2026/06/25/youth-mental-health-first-aid/566284
