Milwaukee County Office for Persons with Disabilities

Milwaukee County Office for Persons with Disabilities Through our work with Milwaukee County departments we provide services that make County programs, services, and facilities accessible to people with disabilities.
(9)

We make information accessible through: Sign language interpreting, providing auditory listening devices, producing materials in alternative formats, providing telephone information and referral services, and publishing Handy-NEWS & NOTES newsletter. We support employment for people with disabilities by: Providing workplace accommodations for Milwaukee County employees with disabilities, making employment testing accommodations available to job applicants with disabilities, referring individuals to community-based employment programs. We support accessible recreation for people with disabilities by: Operating the Wil-O-Way Summer Camp program, offering year-round recreation through the Wil-O-Way centers located in Grant and Underwood parks, promoting recreation programs supported by other community agencies, distributing tickets to the Admirals, Brewers, Bucks, and Wave to members of the Wil-O-Way Key Card program. We assist people to receive transportation services provided through Milwaukee County Transit, Transit Plus, and the Department on Aging. We help remove barriers through: Reviewing architectural plans to make buildings more accessible, reviewing departmental procedures and recommend alternatives that support the inclusion of people with disabilities. We receive guidance through: The Milwaukee County Commission for Persons with Disabilities, review of consumer feedback, and by participating in community activities and organizations. We promote the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Compliance through: The Director of the Office was appointed by the County Executive and confirmed by the County Board as Milwaukee County's ADA Compliance Officer.

Mission: It is the mission of the Office for Persons with Disabilities (OPD) to effectively employ Milwaukee County and community resources to assure that people with disabilities share equally in programs, services and facilities of the County. The Office will provide high quality, responsive services that enhance self-sufficiency, personal safety, economic opportunity and quality of life for all people with disabilities.

This Black History Month, we recommit to our vision of achieving racial equity and making our county the healthiest in the state. To do so, we draw the inspiration to think big and the courage to be bold from the legacy of those who came before us and worked to push us toward progress. I look forward to honoring those legacies this month, and every month, as Milwaukee County continues to rise to the challenge this moment calls of us. Guided by our vision of the future and our reverence for the achievements of the past we will keep moving forwards to a future of equity and justice for all.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Officer alerts the public to a phone scam. Scammers are using the Sheriff's Office phone numbers to scare Milwaukee County residents. Scammers call citizens and tell them they have missed jury duty, and a warrant has been issued for their arrest.

The Sheriff's Office does not call or email citizens threatening arrest. If you receive a similar call, hang up. If you fall victim to the scam and suffer monetary losses, report the call via email to [email protected], or by phone at 414-278-4705.

The phone numbers scammers use mirror actual Sheriff's Office numbers, a concept called "Spoofing." Spoofing occurs when a caller deliberately falsifies the information transmitted to your caller ID display to disguise their identity. Spoofing is often used as part of an attempt to trick someone into giving away valuable personal information so it can be used in fraudulent activity or sold illegally.

Yesterday I was proud to stand with Supervisor Sequanna Taylor, our Milwaukee County Parks Department, and youth from Urban Undergroud to unveil the newly named Harriet Tubman Park.

As we strive to achieve racial equity, we want to make sure that Milwaukee County is place where all our residents are respected, valued, and have opportunities to provide input.

The naming of Harriett Tubman Park, and the naming of Indigenous Peoples’ Park last year, show our serious commitment to recognizing the stories and contributions of all communities.

It may seem small, but Milwaukee County is committed to ensuring residents can visit parks with names that reflect the diverse array of communities that live here and have contributed to making this county great.

Hey, just thought I’d mention that Active Hands (a great website that produces gripping aids for people with an upper limb disability) has now started stocking a wide variety of other disability aids relating to things such as personal care, office work, mobile phone use, gardening, kitchen prep etc. So if you or someone you know has weakened grip or any kind of upper limb disability then it’s well worth checking out; I use a lot of these myself and they can be absolute life savers!
