Why The Gun In Civilization?

Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force.

If you want me to do something for you, you have a choice of either convincing me via argument, or force me to do your bidding under threat of force. Every human interaction falls into one of those two categories, without exception. Reason or force, that's it.

In a truly moral and civilized society, people exclusively interact through persuasion. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction, and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some.

When I carry a gun, you cannot deal with me by force. You have to use reason and try to persuade me, because I have a way to negate your threat or employment of force.

The gun is the only personal weapon that puts a 100-pound woman on equal footing with a 220-pound mugger, a 75-year old retiree on equal footing with a 19-year old gang banger, and a single gay guy on equal footing with a carload of drunk guys with baseball bats. The gun removes the disparity in physical strength, size, or numbers between a potential attacker and a defender.

There are plenty of people who consider the gun as the source of bad force equations. These are the people who think that we'd be more civilized if all guns were removed from society, because a firearm makes it easier for a [armed] mugger to do his job. That, of course, is only true if the mugger's potential victims are mostly disarmed either by choice or by legislative fiat--it has no validity when most of a mugger's potential marks are armed.

People who argue for the banning of arms ask for automatic rule by the young, the strong, and the many, and that's the exact opposite of a civilized society. A mugger, even an armed one, can only make a successful living in a society where the state has granted him a force monopoly.

Then there's the argument that the gun makes confrontations lethal that otherwise would only result in injury. This argument is fallacious in several ways. Without guns involved, confrontations are won by the physically superior party inflicting overwhelming injury on the loser. People who think that fists, bats, sticks, or stones don't constitute lethal force watch too much TV, where people take beatings and come out of it with a bloody lip at worst. The fact that the gun makes lethal force easier works solely in favor of the weaker defender, not the stronger attacker. If both are armed, the field is level.

The gun is the only weapon that's as lethal in the hands of an octogenarian as it is in the hands of a weight lifter. It simply wouldn't work as well as a force equalizer if it wasn't both lethal and easily employable.

When I carry a gun, I don't do so because I am looking for a fight, but because I'm looking to be left alone. The gun at my side means that I cannot be forced, only persuaded. I don't carry it because I'm afraid, but because it enables me to be unafraid. It doesn't limit the actions of those who would interact with me through reason, only the actions of those who would do so by force.

It removes force from the equation...and that's why carrying a gun is a civilized act.

They will die by what they live by... That is what makes them dangerous. Those things that are instilled in them, ingrained... How many generations? For those of you that have children, and parents still alive, that is three generations. How do you change the mentality from that lineage? This is a serious question. I have seen things that no one should have ever experienced. In my three dozen years on this planet, I have learned a thing or two. And while I never experienced a world war, I walked over Skype to a friend while I could hear missals in the background. I never had the chance to serve, medical. I have been shot at, pistol whipped. My scalp hit so hard that they had to staple it shut so that my skull was no longer exposed. Doc thought it was strange that I was laughing...

It wasn't close to what others have gone through.

It wasn't nearly as bad as when I got a call at work from a mother of a friend. MRAPs aren't as good as they sound.

I am digressing.

What do we have to do to change the area?

How many politicians have a positive approval rating at any given time in any given rhetorical journal? If anyone in power has a positive I doubt their credentials... We cannot, we must not trust our leaders.
There are three branches of government, but do you know what makes a sturdier platform? The people. We are the fourth, and oft forgotten branch of what a REPUBLIC should be.

The 29th is Memorial Day. Therefore, many of us reserve this as a weekend to grill, have fun with friends and family... AS WELL WE SHOULD. Those honored dead would be, frankly, angry, that they fought and died for the American Dream for us to not live it. But, in the back of your minds, your hearts, please... Take pause. Remember those that fought and died, not for country, but FOR US. Treasure what they bought with their lives. And give them their well deserved respect.

At face value. 20 or so years there should be a change in government. Would a new order imposed be successful?
The man was not an idiot. but there needs to be a change in thought. we are still deeply mired in the mentality that I was raised with... And in the current stare of affairs soe of it is caustic. Some still pertinent.

In congress there is law to be made. That is simply not happening. Men get old, and sometimes the ideas they have do as well. But there are some that will never get too old for my taste. I believe we have them written down somewhere. Possibly under glass, with some really fancy handwriting on it.

The world is very different now. For man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty and all forms of human life. While it, and its concurrent amendments do not specifically cite the internet, or AR-15's, the ideas behind the document are sacrosanct and easily adapted to new technology and situations. The simple principal is that it is a document meant to address the specific nature of the government, the abilities of said body to govern so granted by the CITIZENS, and limited as such. Any power not specifically granted by the citizens of the United States to their government are the purview of the citizens alone. The constitution does not grant citizens rights, all rights are assumed natural to free and good people; it limits the power of the central government. This unfortunately for some insists that the individual be responsible for their person and actions. Any power given to the government is a freedom taken from the people.

Good god, are you people so wrapped up in your own little world that you didn't see this coming? Violent rhetoric is on both sides, you cannot deny that. Well, you can, but then you are a fool, a useful idiot. Only question is who is reacting to whom, though in the end the answer is pointless. The same people will benefit from it, as they always have.

There is one thing that motivates and inspires i dare say more than money, it is body count. Real or perceived. We don't even have to go back that far to exemplify this. Let us just go back to the last century. The Lusitania: WW1. Pearl Harbor: Begin WW2; Hi**er (whom now apparently everyone that you disagree with now is): Remember WW2. The Cold War: Perceived annihilation from USSR. And if you slept through history, perhaps you remember 9/11. The next one, and it is coming, will hit us hard, and most likely at home. I will be shocked if there aren't any legitimate assassinations before this election cycle is over, or at least soon thereafter.
I digress, what I am saying is that I blame you for this, all of you. For being locked in this 2 party, black and white paradigm of a group of corrupt souls that have proven time and time again to not care for your well being, but you will blindly follow what they do because of one or two issues. Most of which the government should not have a say in for that matter. Some push against the walls, but they are still marching towards the abattoir, willfully. You may say it is not that bad, but look outside... All that peace is just one pretty little lie.
There are issues that no one will address in this country, and the only way we do even remotely confront them is to compare ourselves to other nations... That is a hideously flawed notion. And causes more harm than good.
Restate my assumptions:
1: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
2. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed;
3: That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.
4: Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; 4a: and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable,
4b: than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.
5: But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty*, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

*It is our choice. But too many let it be made for them...
