M.A.P. - Marquette Action Program

M.A.P. - Marquette Action Program For over 30 years, Marquette University students have enjoyed making service trips during Spring brea M.A.P.

This coming Spring Break, make it about community, service and justice. For over 30 years, Marquette University students have enjoyed choosing service trips during Marquette's Spring Break. To spend time living in community, reflecting upon issues of social justice, and making a difference in a community in need, is a memory not to be missed. Our sites are organized within the themes of urban pove

rty, rural poverty/eco-justice, education, human dignity, build-rebuild, and much more. Each site offers our students the chance to live simply and work hand and hand with the community for one week. trips are worthwhile for many reasons: you contribute to the community in which you work, you are exposed to different social, cultural and economic situations in our society, you grow in awareness of justice issues, you learn how service organizations work to make a difference, you meet and interact with new people, and you have time to reflect upon how the experience relates to you personally and your faith.

Time to listen, learn and hear about situations that matter.

With Covid-19 still being a strong and real threat throughout the world, this upcoming academic year is likely to bring many changes. I got brand new perspectives on race and poverty, which I will carry with me forever. I also gained 10 new friends!
I was drawn to Marquette for its service and had heard such great things about MAP from my older friends who had participated. So I decided to check it out! To look into going to Montgomery or any of or other sites check out our web page at www.marquette.edu/cm/service/map

For me, M.A.P. has been an opportunity to learn what it means to live a faith that does justice. It is an opportunity to go all in – to commit to learning, growing, and doing that justice for a whole week. During one trip, I went to Dubuque, IA to spend a week on a Catholic Worker Farm. There, I worked side by side with people who devote their entire life to justice, whether climate justice through organic farming and simple lifestyle, economic justice by working for the uplift of those who are homeless or addicted, food justice by running an urban farm owned by the community, and the relational justice by running an urban farm owned by the community, and the relational justice that comes from an open door and a peaceful heart. They inspired me to cultivate these things in my own life, and I am a better person for it. I decided to do M.A.P. because I knew I wanted to work for change but wasn’t sure how to do it. Each trip I went on through M.A.P. led me to better understand a new aspect of justice through the lens of my faith and has prepared me to truly live that out in the real world. Last year on MAP, I was able to find out that I love working with adults with disabilities and that there is so much we can do to affirm them and encourage them. I also made some really valuable friendships with people who I never would've met otherwise.
I decided to do MAP because my friends encouraged me to do it and I wanted to use my spring break to make a difference in people's lives. Apply to MAP at www.marquette.edu/cm/service/map Pictured Sofi Driscoll 2021 College of Arts and Sciences Majoring in Theology and Psychology

One takeaway that I had from MAP was the power of your presence in impacting your surrounding community. I decided to go on a MAP trip because it was a great way to see a different city over spring break, while doing something meaningful with other Marquette students you would otherwise not be able to meet. I went with three other girls to Detroit, and we really had a good time. Our paths would have never crossed at Marquette, but we literally could not stop laughing the entire trip. MAP really brings you together quickly and immerses you in your site.
Unfortunately, we no longer have a Detroit, Michigan site but we do have a new site in Flint, Michigan. This will be the first year that MAP will take a trip to Flint to work alongside those at The Firestone Center. Apply to go to Michigan or check out a different site at www.marquette.edu/cm/service/map

The biggest take away I got from my MAP trip was: a person is not the stereotypes that society places on them. I went on the MAP trip because I wanted to push my own boundaries and this trip was an amazing place for me to start that process. One takeaway from my M.A.P Trip to Oglala, South Dakota was that there are many social justice issues that I am ignorant of and that I can (and want) to get more involved in. In Oglala, I broke down barriers, biases, and all ideas I had of both the culture of the Lakota Tribe and of the status of the relationship between America and Native American Tribes in general. Conversing and listening to what the specific tribe members spoke to us about acted for me as a call to action to continue to do what I can for this specific social justice issue.
I decided to participate in M.A.P because I wanted to take a step back from focusing on my own individual world, and instead, look for what I can do for others on a larger scale. M.A.P gave me that opportunity through empowering me to be a servant with and for others while getting the change to grow, connect, and reflect with other Marquette Students. Participating in M.A.P. gave me so many new skills. It taught me to be in the moment and appreciate the little things. At my site which was in Erie, PA, we focused on making meaningful connections with the people we were serving and I feel that I brought that back to Milwaukee applying it to my relationships here and my major. I decided to apply to M.A.P. because I had heard so many positive things about it and wanted to serve a community outside of Marquette while forming connections with others. One of the things I took away from my MAP experience last year was a renewed passion in my vocation to be an educator, as I was placed at a school. Also, my MAP group truly became a family. I decided to participate in MAP because I've always loved doing service and wanted to do service in another state. Apply to go on a M.A.P. Trip at www.marquette.edu/cm/service/map/

When I was in Cincinnati with Little Sisters of the Poor, I learned what unconditional love is. Jerry, the gentleman in this picture with me, sat my group down on the last night of our trip and told us a story about how his wife was also in the senior living facility with him until she passed away a couple years ago. Her health started to decline, but he stayed by her side throughout it all. He helped her eat, helped her change – any task that she needed help with, he was right there for her. I was sobbing by the end of his story. I saw this unconditional love in the Sisters, the nurses, the staff and the residents at Little Sisters of the Poor, as well. The way that they all cared for each other, with nurses tending to residents or even residents with each other, they taught me true selflessness, and I try to carry that love with me throughout my daily life.
I participated in M.A.P. because I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone by working with a group of people who I wasn’t entirely comfortable with. I was thrown into a situation I wasn’t prepared for, with people I didn’t know, and for a social cause I wasn’t too familiar with. I’ve never been good with elderly people, so M.A.P. forced me to try something new.

The biggest take away I had from participating in a M.A.P. trip is the friendships and relationships I got to forge because of the service that we were doing. I am still friends with many people I served with my freshman year in Nashville – one of them is the current student director of M.A.P.! I decided to participate in M.A.P. my freshman year because I wanted to do something meaningful with me spring break and M.A.P. helped me to do it! From being a MAP facilitator I learned how to work with others who's values and goals differ from your own. I learned to compromise and listen to others. I learned that service is not just getting the work done, but forming those bonds and relationships in the process.
I became a MAP facilitator because I greatly enjoyed my facilitators my freshmen year. I admired all their work and effort that they put into the trip to make it the best that they could and wanted to do that for others. I loved their teamwork and companionship they had with one another and hoped to get the same experience.
