They’re at it again. “At what again?” you ask.
Intentionally putting worker’s lives at risk when there is no need to do so.

On Tuesday July 21, the House Committee on Education and the Workforce is expected to mark up H.R. 6213, the Heat Workforce Standards Act of 2025, which would prohibit OSHA from finalizing, implementing, or enforcing a federal Heat Injury and Illness Prevention Standard.

No worker has asked to be protected from the proposed protection. With the several recent high heat/high humidity events and the certainty that there will be more and they will be hotter and longer lasting now is the time for employers to if not get ahead of the curve then at least not be so far behind it. Dying from heat illness is not a pleasant way to die neither for the worker or their coworkers that must assume they will be next. For politicians that are constantly claiming to be ‘pro life’ they are making it much, much harder for workers to have one.

Join us, and the National COSH, in sending a message to Congress: “Don’t prohibit protecting workers!” and sign the petition by Noon CDST Monday, July 20, 2026 at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdeXRRY3zzfk7mqhaZnIcnA6lVzSEU8e8w8qsAm-z74SVPFeA/viewform?pli=1.

When speaking about protecting workers from extreme temperatures in the workplace it’s not just the temperature on the thermometer that needs consideration. Humidity is another important factor to consider. People with compromised breathing may have difficulty at normal temperatures but high humidity levels.

Workplace protection needs to be individualized for each work area where conditions require but should also include flexible accommodations for individual worker needs.

One of the important things NOT getting discussed because of the multitude of obscene actions of the current administration in Washington DC is the potential reopening of the list of toxic substances and how or IF they’re regulated.

It is yet another direct attack on the health and safety of our jobs, our communities and the country as a whole. We cannot allow corporations, their lobbyists and the Congressperson-for-sale to put our lives, our livelihoods or our neighborhoods at further risk.

Exposure to extreme temperatures can have terrible effects on a persons health both physically and mentally. The affects are stronger if working during the exposure. The more strenuous the work the more acutely the affects.
The more exposure to extreme temperatures a worker experiences the more damage is done to their health and the smaller the recovery and longer before it is apparent.
And just because temperatures have dropped and/or humidity has lessened it does not mean it is safe to return to regular work practices. Too often once temps/humidity drops precautions are forgotten and recovery is incomplete before being exposed to hazardous conditions because they go unrecognized as being present.

Only weeks into the summer season and we are experiencing extended extreme temperature conditions.
If you don’t already have the NIOSH-OSHA Heat Safety Tool app for your phone you should get and install it now. It is free.
It provides very accurate information. Much more accurate and up to date than the news reports that rely on monitoring stations such as major airports.
The app cannot tell you what the conditions are inside a building but it can tell the conditions outside at the location you are currently at.

Helps to plan outdoor work activities based on how hot it feels throughout the day.

As Spring heats up rapidly in its last week we need to again be aware of working in extreme temperatures. Heat illnesses are silent killers as the person often doesn’t realize they’re at risk until it starts becoming severe.
Here are some great graphics from NPR to help keep aware of signs and symptoms of heat illness:

Human bodies have a natural cooling system, but it can do only so much in high temperatures and humidity. Here's the science behind how heat kills. And how to protect yourself.

2026 Dirty Dozen Release

Every year National COSH and the individual COSH organizations compile a list of the worst employers in America. These corporations have not just allowed the conditions to exist that has injured, made a worker ill or resulted in a worker dying on the job but have made the conscious choice that it’s the price they’re willing to pay for continued profits. The 2025 Dirty Dozen list can be found at https://nationalcosh.org/Dirty_Dozen.

This Wednesday, April 22 at 1pm CDT the 2026 Dirty Dozen edition will be released. Will your employer be on the list? Will your children’s employer be on the list? Join us by registering at https://default.salsalabs.org/Te285c4fe-e5d1-476a-8ed4-20dbfc15581f/40dd3c7d-770d-476e-9b49-2b32f319dae2.
