Our children go through a lot during their teens years!
Serious problems usually occur after less serious problems go unnoticed.
Don't ignore early warning signs- it's important to monitor your teen to watch for these, it also lets them know you care.

Looking for your child to follow instructions?
Use "Clear Calm Instructions" when asking your child to do something. Get close to your child and use eye contact.
Use a calm voice and tell them exactly what you need them to do, then check for understanding.

Taking your kiddo on shopping outings can feel daunting.
To make it a bit easier, try:
-Involving your child in the shopping, have them follow a list or look for certain items.
-Reminding them of the rules before entering the store (i.e. stay close, no touching) and have them repeat the rules and agree.

It’s important to support your child’s self esteem.
If your child struggles to make friends, spend time talking with them about what it means to be a good friend.
Allow your child to make decisions. When their thoughts and opinions are valued they have a stronger sense of belonging in the family which leads to healthy self-esteem.

Stress is difficult for everyone, and parenting is one of the most stressful jobs!
Sometimes we create more stress for ourselves by thinking negatively and running those negative thoughts over and over in our minds.
This undermines self-confidence and increases stress. One way to counteract this is by developing coping statements.
Coping statements are ways of telling yourself that you can cope with your situation and your feelings. They are helpful statements that you can say to yourself to reduce stress and increase confidence.
Coping statements might be useful as your child begins a temper tantrum or when something difficult is occurring at work.
You say things to yourself like:
“I can do this. I have done things like this before.”

Getting your kiddo to bed can seem like a big feat some days- especially when you are tired yourself!
Consistency is key- create a bedtime routine and stick to it.
Avoid bedtime "parenting traps" such as accidental rewards with extra attention, letting them sleep in your bed, etc.

School is in full swing and you may already be getting comments or concerns from your childs’ teacher regarding behavior.
Talk with your child's teacher. It can be hard to hear that your child is misbehaving, so prepare yourself to be open to what the teacher is telling you.
Sometimes you might be struggling with similar issues at home and this will be an opportunity for you and the teacher to be on the same page.
For support with behavior at school check out our Parent Connections next week!
