Last Thursday, Badger kicked off the debut of our new program â Helping Our Community. This is a program we have internally created that will give our employees opportunities to volunteer individually or as a group, representing Badger Mutual for local selected charities.
Over the past few weeks, Badger has been collecting funds by selling âpopcorn for a purposeâ to our employees and neighboring building tenants; those proceeds were used purchase supplies to make a whole lot of sandwiches!
Pictured above, is the help of our incredible employees making (just short of) 400 sandwiches that we have donated to The Guest House of Milwaukee. Guest House of Milwaukee provides shelter, housing, education and services to Milwaukeeâs homeless who seek to transform their lives and is within a few blocks of our home office.
This is only the beginning of our Being Badger â Helping Our Community Program initiative. Stay tuned for more stories to come!
âPromoting service through volunteerism.â
This week, we recognize the selfless volunteers who serve our communities. As part of Volunteer Recognition Week, we want give a shout out to Joseph Kaltenberg, the Chair of the Cityâs Employee Resource Group: Community Service & Volunteerism. Heâs our .
CS&V ERG was started a couple years back as a way to leverage employeesâ commitment to service by improving the community, through volunteering at local organizations. Those volunteers serve as âbrand ambassadorsâ for the City. As Chair, Mr. Kaltenberg organizes monthly membership meetings, provides direct volunteer opportunities, and connects members with existing service events. In the last few weeks, the ERG has volunteered at Sojourner Family Peace Center, the Guest House of Milwaukee, and MKE Urban Stablesbles.
You can say his passion for service and volunteering was fostered by his two-year program in Zambia for the U.S. Peace Corps.
âMy time in Africa gave me an appreciation for Ubuntu philosophy that defines humanity in terms of our connection to one another. The practice of empathy deepens these connections, and strengthens our community,â said Kaltenberg.
Aside from being Chair of the Community Service & Volunteerism ERG, Mr. Kaltenbergâs main job at the City is Program Coordinator of MKE Parks in DPW Milwaukee. Under that role, he oversees reconstruction projects, maintenance, community engagement, planning, and fundraising for 52 MKE parks. Heâs been working at the City since 2015.
âI'm a parks guy, who gets to work on parks, and I'm a Milwaukeean who gets to work on Milwaukee. I strive to be as resourceful, efficient, and transparent as possible. I love being the connector/collaborator, whether it is helping people navigate a city process, connecting them with their local elected official, or introducing others working toward the same goals,â he said.
Mr. Kaltenberg graduated from UW-Lacrosse and holds a Masterâs Degree from Marquette University. When heâs not working or volunteering, you can find him enjoying the outdoors or renovating his 1884 Riverwest home.
We thank Mr. Kaltenberg for his service and commitment to the City of Milwaukee!
Thanks to everyone who contributed food for tonightâs Guest House of Milwaukee dinner. This is a few of the many First Church folks who made tonightâs meal possible.
Members of our CW18 | My24 family got out of the office & into the community for the 2023 this week.
Grateful to discover more about the good being done to transform lives at Guest House of Milwaukee & assist in serving their clients.

Is this shelter up and running? I know of two individuals in the area that are presently living on the street there. I'm trying to help them find shelter. I'm in Florida.. any information would be appreciated
