The American Geographical Society Library (AGSL), one of the premier collections of its kind in North America, contains over 1.3 million items supporting instruction, research and outreach at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and around the world. The collection contains maps, atlases, books periodicals, film media and digital data files. Its scope is worldwide with coverage from the 15th cent

ury to the present. Its resources have been used to produce an ongoing series of digital collections, including an award winning website on Afghanistan, a comprehensive site on world transportation and collections featuring unique photographic documentation of such places as Tibet, the Republic of Georgia, Korea and World War II Poland. The AGSL offers scholarly programs for the campus and local community throughout the year and welcomes visiting scholars from across the US and the world.

New Map(s) Acquisition Alert! ๐Ÿ—บโ—
This two-map set, titled The Cold at Inuit Nunangat by renowned cartographer Margaret Pearce depicts Inuit homelands in Canada, with one map, Protecting the Cold, showing the ways that native stewardship preserves the landscape, while the other map, Destroying the Cold depicts ways in which southerners interfere with and endanger Inuit self-determination and protection of the earth. We are so excited to have these maps join our collection - come on by to see them from 12pm-4:30pm Tues.-Friday. or by appoitment 9am-12pm!

In commemoration of the United States Semiquincentennial, the AGSL pop-up exhibit featuring a selection of national and regional maps and atlases depicting the vibrant and complex places and peoples of America is on display from now until the end of the month. Come on by to see it Tuesday-Friday 12pm-4:30pm, or make an appointment to come in 9am-12pm and in the meantime, have a safe holiday weekend! โ™ฅ

We here at the AGSL are delighted to announce that Georgia Brown has been appointed the new head of the American Geographical Society Library! ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ’
Starting her journey as a graduate intern at the AGSL in 2018, Georgia then served as the public services librarian beginning in 2020 and has been the interim head of the AGSL since October 2025. Hailing from Tennessee, where she received an Bachelor's in history, Georgia is a proud panther alum, having received a Master of Library and Information Science, as well as a Master of Arts in History from UWM in 2020.
Georgia brings with her a variety of academic and professional recognitions, an impressive track record of subject matter expertise, exceptional user services, experience with the media, and scholarship and professional service as well as extensive involvement in the cartographic community.
Georgia has been an invaluable part of the AGSL for the past eight years and we are so lucky to have her as the head of our collections and staff. Congratulations Georgia!! ๐Ÿ’–
