C/Anderson had the opportunity this summer to volunteer in Fort McCoy for exercise Patriot Warrior. For two weeks, Air Force reservists participated in a deployment-style exercise to enhance wartime skills. While there, C/Anderson was able to participate as a role player and simulated specific roles during exercise play, such as OPFOR, civilians on the battlefield, friendly forces, victims, media, or other bystanders. She was also able to ride in and look at multiple different aircraft, set up tents, meet cadets from MTU Air Force ROTC Det. 400 and overall learn about how the Air Force works outside of ROTC. #det930 #afrotc

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Det 930 will be spotlighting several airmen who have made significant impacts in Air Force history. First up is Lieutenant Colonel Olga E. Custodio, who became the first Latina Air Force pilot. In her early life she faced several rejections but had the perseverance and determination to achieve her dreams. She always knew she wanted to be a pilot, and when she enrolled in the University of Puerto Rico, she applied to the ROTC program. However, Custodio was rejected for being a woman, as only men were admitted into the program at the time. After graduation she worked in aviation in any capacity she could, including an accounting position for Puerto Rico's International Airline. While working she never stopped striving toward her goal and applied to become an Air Force Officer several times before a slot finally opened and she was accepted. She completed the Flight Screening Pilot Officer Training program in 1980 before entering Officer Training School. She qualified for Undergraduate Pilot Training and graduated a year later, fulfilling her dream of becoming a pilot and a commissioned military officer. She served 24 years before retiring, where she broke yet another barrier by becoming the first Latina commercial airline captain. She now volunteers her time to nonprofit organizations and motivational speaking.

AFROTC Field Training is a rigorous, two-week encampment that evaluates cadets on leadership, followership, physical fitness, and critical thinking while in a high-stress environment. It is a prerequisite to enter the Professional Officer Course, where cadets will lead their detachments and progress towards commissioning in the U.S. Air Force or U.S. Space Force. To be selected for Field Training, cadets must compete to earn an Enrollment Allocation (EA). Congratulations to our cadets who graduated Field Training this summer and received their Prop and Wings! #afrotc #det930

This past week, Detachment 930 coordinated with Marquette University’s Computer Science department to host an Air Force Association CyberCamp. The AFA CyberCamp is an opportunity for 7-12 students at any level of computer literacy to learn and practice cybersecurity skills, ranging from simple password hygiene up to system administrator-level controls. Following the Camp, students have the opportunity to put their cybersecurity skills to the test and compete in this year’s CyberPatriot competition, which will put them against teams from around the country. Students and instructors, thanks for making it a great week!

Today marks the 77th anniversary of D-Day, which was the first day of Operation Overlord and the beginning of the liberation of Europe during World War II. The United States Army Air Forces and other Allied air forces were critical in the operation’s success by crippling the Luftwaffe, gathering intelligence, destroying enemy transportation, and giving close air support to ground forces. To set the stage for the invasion, air superiority was required. Bombing campaigns on enemy airfields and transportation routes were conducted, and this was continued into the operation. On the early morning of D-Day, Douglas C-47 aircraft dropped airborne forces into enemy territory. As the Allied amphibious troops began to hit the beach, bombers helped destroy beach defenses and fighters protected the other aircraft and the ships at sea. Fighters also roamed across the Normandy area to attack the enemy at will. The bombers used included the Martin B-26 Marauder and the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress. For fighters, the North American P-51 Mustang, Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, Supermarine Spitfire, and Hawker Typhoon were heavily utilized. In late July of the same year, air attacks during Operation Cobra broke enemy forces and began the Normandy breakout. Only with the Allied air forces was the Normandy campaign possible and successful.

On November 27th, 2018, during a joint military operation to liberate the Andar District in the Ghazni Province of Afghanistan, Staff Sergeant Dylan Elchin was one of three service members killed when their vehicle hit an improvised explosive device. He was a combat controller serving with the U.S. Air Force’s 26th Special Tactics Squadron, and was deployed to Afghanistan in August 2018 as a member of a U.S. Army Special Forces Operational Detachment Alpha team. In his role he directed close air support aircraft, delivered ordnance on enemy targets, and advised the Ground Force Commander. Throughout his service he was the recipient of several awards and decorations, including the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal with Valor. He was described by others as level-headed, highly motivated, and an ideal teammate. Today and every day, we remember and honor service members like Staff Sergeant Elchin, who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country.
