Originally called "Gold Star Mother's Day", the last Sunday in September is known as "Gold Star Mothers and Father's Day". According to the US Army, "The term Gold Star family is a modern reference that comes from the Service Flag. These flags/banners were first flown by families during World War I. The flag included a blue star for every immediate family member serving in the armed forces of the United States, during any period of war or hostilities in which the armed forces of the United States were engaged. If that loved one died, the blue star was replaced by a gold star. This allowed members of the community to know the price that the family had paid in the cause of freedom."
When you visit the Michigan Heroes Museum, we use a similar distinction in the color frame we use for the hero's photo. A silver frame shows they survived their conflict, while a gold frame is used to show that hero lost their life in defense of our great nation.
To our Gold Star Families, know you are always in our hearts. We will always be sorry for your loss, and greatly appreciate your loved one's sacrifice. The best we can do is continue to tell their stories and keep their memories alive.
