Prairie State Park’s Mission Statement:
To preserve and interpret the largest remaining example of original tallgrass prairie in Missouri. The park is dedicated to sustaining a large tallgrass prairie in its native form for future generations to learn from and enjoy. Tallgrass prairies once covered more than a third of Missouri; today, less than one percent remains, much of it preserved at Prairie

State Park. Visitors to the park see panoramic vistas of swaying grass and ever-changing wildflowers. They also may spot the park’s resident bison herd. The state park system is composed of 93 parks and historic sites managed by the Dept. of Natural Resources for the benefit of all Missourians. Prairie State Park is seeking bids for hay contracts in 7 units totalling about 380 acres. Payment for the right to cut and bale hay is in hours of brushhogging time and up to 10 round bales for park use. Interested parties must attend the pre-bid meeting to go over contract requirements and receive the bid packet.

The pre-bid meeting will be at the park nature center at 8 am on May 14. Bids will be due May 21 at 5 pm, and contractors may begin cutting hay June 15.

This is another favorite story about amazing visitors. Many people enjoy learning more about bison by attending a Bison Saunter. Some even attend more than one. One showed up with her own signature sweatshirt!
Meet Heather. She attended the December Bison Saunter sporting her homemade sweatshirt! How cool is that!?
It doesn't end there, Heather signed up for every Bison Saunter of 2026!
We love having people embrace the prairie and bison. Quite frankly it is why we are here. We are merely here to care for it so that all that are interested have a place to go and be with nature and as Heather put it, "It's a good day for a Bison Saunter."
