This week, Legislator Olena Nicks, joined by county workers, civil rights leaders, clergy and Legs. Delia DeRiggi-Whitton - Nassau County Legislator & Legislator Debra Mulé, called on the Blakeman administration once again to recognize Juneteenth- in a new push to make the day honoring Black freedom and the end of slavery an official county holiday.

While the federal government and New York State pause to honor the end of slavery in America, Nassau County remains one of the last county government holdouts in New York State, and one of the last in the whole nation.

Special thanks are owed to CSEA Nassau Local 830 and President Kris Kalendar- without CSEA members, this County would grind to a halt. Nassau County employees, especially the hardworking men and women of CSEA 830, deserve to have their voices respected, and the importance of Juneteenth deserves its day as a holiday that gives the profound recognition the day deserves.

Today, our caucus came together with the Nassau County Police Department to honor the 50 Nassau Police Officers who have died in the line of duty in service to our community. Police Memorial Day is one of the most impactful days of the year, a sobering reminder that so many families and friends bear the memory every day of those we’ve lost- selfless, dedicated officers who put their lives on the line. Without these brave officers, we would not have the proud distinction of being the safest County in America!

Thank you to the Nassau County Police Department for the always profound and reverent ceremony, a fitting tribute to the finest we have lost in our communities.

Congratulations to Minority Leader Delia DeRiggi-Whitton - Nassau County Legislator on this major milestone!

On Friday, City of Glen Cove Office of the Mayor and I will be holding a press conference at Crescent Beach to announce that after 17 losing years, Crescent Beach will once again be open for swimming- and we would love for YOU to join us to mark this special occasion!

Crescent Beach is a staple of our Glen Cove community, where I myself once taught swimming lessons! Generations of our neighbors have made and shared memories here, and Friday marks the opportunity for a new generation to experience this beautiful treasure right in our backyard.

I would like to thank the Mayors of Glen Cove, who for 17 years, regardless of party, have all worked to make this day possible, along with my colleagues from the Glen Cove city council, and now at the Nassau County Legislature. This collaborative effort would not have been complete, though, without the cooperation and investment of the local residents around Crescent Beach, who were instrumental in helping make the improvements necessary to combat the runoff issue that has plagued us for so long.

This is a personally impactful day for me, as a Glen Cove resident, former lifeguard and city councilwoman, and as a Legislator for Glen Cove, that we have been able to bring this beautiful piece of our community back to a state all of our residents can truly fully enjoy, for this summer and so many to come. I hope to see you all this Friday to mark this fabulous occasion!

VICTORY ON OPIOID FUNDS - Newsday reports on the unified Democratic resistance that thwarted Blakeman’s disastrous attempt to raid nearly $14 million from the County’s opioid settlement reserves to balance his budget -

"We'll take a victory where we can," Legislator Olena Nicks said Tuesday. "However, there is still so much work that needs to be done. Our residents can still benefit from the money that we do have that has not been used. We're going to continue to push the administration to make sure that funding reaches programs on the ground, and that we're helping the residents who are most in need."

Nicks, who has sponsored a bill mandating that any interest or investment income earned on opioid settlement money remain parked in the settlement fund, said if Blakeman did not return the money, Democrats were prepared to vote against any legislation to close the financial books on 2025.

The policy reversal came after Democratic lawmakers and the parents of individuals who died following drug overdoses complained that the transfer was inappropriate and should be reversed.

Congratulations to Legislator Carrie Solages and Assemblywoman Michaelle C. Solages and Governor Kathy Hochul - years of advocacy led to this huge milestone for the community!

“If you can dream it, you can achieve it — and the Elmont Community Center is a perfect example of why you should never give up on your dreams. Today’s announcement is the result of many years of tireless advocacy by advocates who would only accept the best for our community’s future, and it shows how when we stand together, we can achieve great things. I am deeply thankful to Governor Hochul and Assemblywoman Solages for their efforts to bring this vision to life for Long Island families, the developers of this project, and the Empire State Development Corporation for ensuring that the promises made to Elmont will be fully realized.” -Legislator Solages

The new center will include programs for youth and seniors including wellness, education, a half-gymnasium for sports and community events.
