Questions About the New West City Park Playground? We Hope This Helps!
We’ve seen your questions about the new playground, and we hope this answers most of them!
This renovation is much more than a playground replacement, it’s an investment in creating a space where children of all abilities can play together. Our goal is to build a playground that is fun, welcoming, and accessible for everyone in our community.
What’s coming to West City Park?
• A large new play structure featuring the Volo Aire, an exciting inclusive play experience designed so children with disabilities and mobility challenges can participate alongside their peers.
• Poured-in-Place (PIP) safety surfacing throughout the main playground area, providing a smooth, accessible surface for wheelchairs, walkers, and strollers.
• Small play structure for ages 2-5 years
• Additional inclusive play features including:
• Cozy Dome
• Oodle® Swing
• Rhapsody® Warble Chimes
• We-Go-Round®
What about the swings?
The swing sets will remain in their current locations and will be replaced with new swings, including an inclusive swing so more children can enjoy the experience. The swing areas will use Engineered Wood Fiber (EWF), an ADA-accessible safety surfacing commonly used in parks across the country.
🛝While the current playground equipment may still look like it has plenty of life left, many of the structures have reached the point where replacement parts are no longer manufactured or available. When components wear out or break, repairs become difficult and, in some cases, impossible to make properly. This project allows us to replace aging equipment with modern, safe, and accessible play features that will serve our community for many years to come.
🌳We also want to reassure everyone that the beautiful mature trees in the park are staying. Preserving healthy trees has been a priority throughout the design process. Any tree that is alive and healthy will remain, providing the natural shade, beauty, and character that families have enjoyed for generations. The new playground has been designed to work with these trees, creating a comfortable and inviting place to play while maintaining the natural feel of West City Park.
We know many of you have wonderful memories at West City Park, and we’re excited to create new ones for future generations. While the playground will be closed during construction, the end result will be a safer, more inclusive, and more exciting place for children and families to play.
