Bad faith attacks are used to distract from the real issues and candidate's experience. Mary Moriarty and her backers made several false allegations of me throughout the 2022 campaign, including saying that I used homophobic slurs while in the County Attorney's Office (I did not), calling me a Republican (I am not and have never been), repeatedly lying about my law license (which was current and active throughout my career), and even insinuating that I wasn't pro-choice because I had a daughter at a young age.

I am disappointed, but not surprised, that Moriarty's heir apparent, Cedrick Frazier, is highlighting similarly baseless attacks against former U.S. Attorney Anders Folk, who I've proudly endorsed for County Attorney. The author of these attacks works for a subsidiary of Take Action Minnesota. Take Action Minnesota spent over $230,000 to elect Mary Moriarty as Hennepin County Attorney in 2022. That massive contribution triggered a campaign finance investigation, which found that Take Action had received those funds from a national partner with the stipulation that the money be used in state legislative races — not a local county attorney contest like ours.

Kudos to former DFL Chair Mike Erlandson for his very thorough response to these attacks.

I am proud to support my Northside neighbor Viviana Salazar for County Commissioner. Effective leadership at the local level is more important than ever and Viviana will bring that to the Hennepin County Board.

The Hennepin County Attorney's Office should lead the public safety conversation for the entire state. It has incredible, dedicated prosecutors. What's missing right now is leadership. As a former Acting U.S. Attorney, brilliant prosecutor, and dedicated public servant, Anders Folk is the best choice to lead this office out of the chaos of the Mary Moriarty era.

Proud to be endorsed by former Judge Martha Holton Dimick — a life long public servant and respected advocate for safety and justice.

Grateful for her trust and focused on delivering the fair, effective leadership Hennepin County deserves.

I served as a prosecutor for almost 15 years and as a judge for a decade. Those were demanding jobs, but one thing I miss about the courtroom is that people are held accountable for dishonesty. Lying in a court of law under oath isn’t rewarded — it is perjury.

Accountability is far less common in our politics than it is in the courts. In fact, in the age of President Donald Trump, attacking journalists who ask you tough questions has become a tactic to avoid that very accountability.

Unfortunately, in a recent debate it became clear that Minneapolis mayoral candidate Omar Fateh, currently a state senator, had adopted a similar approach when he was pressed on ethics questions surrounding his decision to push legislation to fast-track approvals for the already fraud-ridden Housing Stabilization Services (HSS) program. At the time he introduced this bill, his wife was still the owner of a company that was a part of the HSS industry. The HSS program was so rife with fraud that the U.S. attorney for Minnesota determined that the “vast majority” of the program was fraudulent. Citing those concerns, Gov. Tim Walz took action to shut it down. Since then we have seen the first wave of indictments, with more expected soon.

I find it quite concerning that a top candidate for mayor tried to make it easier, not harder, for money to flow from a program that appears to have funded fraud instead of supporting those in need of housing assistance.

"One thing I miss about the courtroom is that people are held accountable for dishonesty," Martha Holton Dimick writes.

I was at this convention. It was not a legitimate process. In addition to 30% of eligible voters' votes not being counted on the first ballot, many delegates and alternates were scrubbed from the lists despite being elected by their neighbors at precinct caucuses.

Tyler Balbuena and I were two of them. When I confronted the Minneapolis DFL Chair about this mistake, he said the credentials committee "randomly” deleted some applicants listed at the bottom of the forms submitted by the Wards/Precincts where they were above city delegate allotment. As the top vote getter, I was atop the list, but was still crossed out for some reason.

Tyler and I both signed a letter taking a leave of absence from DFL leadership positions and stating our discontent with the Twin Cities DSA's celebration of a terrorist attack in 2023. I wonder if that had anything to do with this.

In any event, yesterday's convention was not a legitimate process and should be challenged.

I hope everyone is having a good Holidays!

Over the past two weeks, I watched with dismay as both the Minneapolis and St. Paul City Councils cut funding to police through budget amendments. Right now, police recruitment, staffing and reform implementation should be top priorities. Instead, the activist councils have put these items on the chopping block.

For a more detailed and informative take, please read this wonderful piece by the ever-thoughtful Latonya Reeves, Julie Wicklund, Catherine Shreves, and John Satorius.

Trust in the Minneapolis Police Department will not be rebuilt overnight, but it cannot be rebuilt if the resources to recruit the right officers are methodically gutted.

Vote for Don Samuels for Congress on or before August 13th!

I'm proud to be endorsed by former Judge, assistant Hennepin County Attorney, and candidate for Hennepin County Attorney, Martha Holton Dimick!

"Don Samuels is a man who will always fight for what is best for our community and nation, even when it’s personally and politically difficult to do so, and I am proud to endorse him for Congress. He bucked the party to support me in my campaign for Hennepin County Attorney against Mary Moriarty because he knew she would harm our community. I have seen his work firsthand in North Minneapolis, where he’s helped reduce gun violence and empower our youth, and I know he will bring that energy and effectiveness to Congress." - Martha

I've known Mary Moriarty for 25 years. She was willing, as a defense attorney, to walk close to the ethical line to free the suspected criminal defendant she was representing. This personal pattern became more damaging as she rose up the ranks and became chief public defender.

I observed her attempts to manipulate the narrative to avoid her impending termination in that role. While she was eventually terminated, she successfully organized an effort to repair her reputation by claiming she was fired because she supported racial justice. That tactic was effective in the political climate present in fall 2020 (although Moriarty is still prohibited from practicing as a public defender in the state of Minnesota).

As Hennepin County attorney, she has continued this pattern of obfuscation and dishonesty. On Tuesday morning, she told KSTP's Tom Hauser that no one has the "facts" of the Londregan case except for her and her team. Therefore, Gov. Tim Walz, Rep. Angie Craig and others are unqualified to speak on it. Let's take that claim at face value and examine only Moriarty's own statements about why she dropped the charges against state trooper Ryan Londregan on Sunday in the July 2023 death of Ricky Cobb II:

1) The defense raised "new evidence" (that Londregan feared for his life) at a court hearing in April. Moriarty still went forward with the $1 million contract with the Steptoe law firm after this hearing. She went in front of the County Board on May 3 to justify this contract and did not mention her new misgivings about the case after this claim. Further, the defense previously presented this evidence on Jan. 24. Moriarty appears to not be telling the whole truth.

2) The advocates for Londregan created a "Jan. 6" environment in the Hennepin County Government Center that threatened the Cobb family and Moriarty's own staff. In reality, they stood peacefully and wore T-shirts. When pressed by a reporter, Moriarty walked back this claim. Again, the claim does not hold water.

3) That Gov. Tim Walz forced her hand by declaring he was going to take the case away. This is not her public explanation, but it is what she told the Cobb family when they asked her on Monday. This explanation is likely the most truthful, in my opinion.

However, when asked why the governor would want to take this case away, she told the Star Tribune it's "because I am a q***r woman in this role." Identity politics may have worked to save Moriarty's reputation in 2020 when she hurled similar claims at public defense administrators, but I don't believe the public will buy that our liberal Democratic governor is homophobic.

As Moriarty inevitably pivots her narrative again to avoid confronting her own mistakes, I would like to offer a few distinctions that could help provide moral clarity. Her problem is not her q***rness, nor her progressivism, nor even her determination to do exactly what she wants all the time; it is the lack of concern for ethics, justice and honesty as fundamental values that supersede her own personal or political aims.

There is nothing wrong with holding police accountable, but you should not allow your bias against them to impact your charging decisions.

There is nothing wrong with disagreeing with Gov. Walz, but he is not homophobic.

There is nothing wrong with changing your mind about a charging decision, but you should give an honest explanation about why you did so to every audience.

Prosecutors are officers of the court. It's incumbent upon them to know the laws, follow courtroom procedures and do their best to present cases as accurately and succinctly as possible.

It appears some critical pieces were overlooked or ignored when Moriarty charged this case. But even if you agree with the decision, you cannot defend the process. Moriarty's unethical behavior damages public safety by eroding trust, emboldening violent offenders, and threatening law enforcement's ability to do their jobs and recruit good officers.

And if her bias against police was not already apparent, Moriarty refused to say the name of the police officer murdered last week in her county, Jamal Mitchell, for several days until it served her political purposes to insert into a statement about the Londregan charges.

Trooper Londregan, the Cobb family and everyone else involved in this case deserve an apology. More than anything, the citizens of Hennepin County deserve better than this former public defender with an ax to grind.

Her handling of the state trooper case is part of a pattern.

CONGRATULATIONS to Andrea Jenkins, LaTrisha Vetaw, Michael Rainville and all of the other victorious municipal and school board candidates. I had a great time volunteering for candidates I supported this year.

I was also glad to see Kentucky re-elect their Democratic Governor - a great reminder that reaching voters across the political spectrum is a recipe for success.
