The 22nd leg of SAYPE's monumental land art project "Beyond Walls" is complete on the riverfront lawn at Boom Island Park! Community members gathered with Saype on Friday and Saturday, June 5 and 6, to celebrate the artwork and its message of unity.

Minneapolis is host to the first United States installation of the globally recognized public art initiative that launched in 2019. Since then, Beyond Walls has traveled across four continents, from Fiji to Istanbul to Rio, and in front of landmarks like the Eiffel Tower in Paris and Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.

Beyond Walls is a quiet but radical proposition: that what we share as human beings is greater than what divides us. The work carries no slogan, no flag, no agenda. It is an open invitation to pause, to look, and to remember that we are linked.

Now that the artwork is finished, people are welcome to walk on it. The land art fresco ended up being larger than anticipated – about 310 feet long and 75 feet wide. It was painted with an eco-friendly, biodegradable mixture Saype worked for years to develop.

Saype created this artwork free of charge for the people of Minneapolis. It will fade naturally over the next few weeks, reminding us that the traces we leave on earth are not measured by their duration, but by their meaning.

“I found an incredible humanity in Minneapolis — in the welcome of its people, their stories, their kindness. I'm deeply grateful for that,” said Saype. “And this is the power of art: to bring people together. I hope this work will make people dream — here, and far beyond.”

We're hosting the last two BioBlitz adventures of a two-year series at two new parks this month: June 20 at Lake Hiawatha and June 27 at Lake Nokomis.

What's a BioBlitz, you ask? It's a hands-on way for everyone - not just scientists! - to explore the range of life forms that share Minneapolis parks: Birds, insects, fungi, flowers and so much more!

People of all ages and backgrounds collaborate with local experts to find and identify flora and fauna at a specific time and place, creating a snapshot of biodiversity.

Each daylong BioBlitz is divided into multiple time blocks, so you can sign up for as many or as few as you wish. Get details and sign up at minneapolisparks.org/activities-events/nature-activities/bioblitz-minneapolis-parks/.

Funding for the BioBlitz Minneapolis Parks program was provided by the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund (ENRTF), as recommended by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR).

Last night we celebrated a new North Minneapolis Trail Connection at Ole Olson Park. What a beautiful night as Minnesota summer showed up in full force and this new Minneapolis riverfront view did not disappoint!

This 1,000-foot trail connection extends a popular riverfront regional trail past the end of West River Road, traveling under the BNSF railroad bridge, while adding new riverside access in North Minneapolis.

Special thanks to Representative Fue Lee and Mississippi Watershed Management Organization for being there last night to help us celebrate.

This project was funded through a state infrastructure bill grant and a Mississippi Watershed Management Organization grant. We're grateful to have committed state and local government partners who recognize the importance of equitable investments in our parks.

Internationally acclaimed artist SAYPE has begun work on a monumental land art project Beyond Walls at Boom Island Park!

There are two chances to see the artwork, hear from Saype, and participate in a giant group photo linking arms around the 250-foot-long by 50-foot-wide artwork on June 5 and 6, 3-5 pm. More details here: Beyond Walls Community Celebration and Group Photo

The mural depicts intertwined hands, the defining symbol of Beyond Walls and its message of human connection.

On June 5 and 6, 3-5 pm, people are invited to experience the artwork after it’s completed and participate in a giant group photo where everyone links together around the artwork.
Park staff will provide free family activities and music, with a food truck available and a chance to interact with Saype. Photo planned around 4 pm.

This is the first United States installation of the globally recognized public art initiative that launched in 2019 at the foot of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Since then, Beyond Walls has traveled across four continents, including stints in Geneva, Berlin, Istanbul, Venice, Cape Town, Tokyo and Cairo.

Temporary fencing and signage will be in place to keep people off the artwork while it’s created. After it’s finished, people are welcome to walk on it. Saype’s frescoes last anywhere from three weeks to three months, depending on weather and climate.

These photos show Beyond Walls in Fuji and Rio, Boom Island Park before painting began, and Saype beginning painting today, June 1, at Boom Island Park.
