BMPP Giving Circle

BMPP Giving Circle BMPP fuel good ideas that advance social justice in AAPI communities. The giving circle strives to fill a little of that gap.

The idea of creating a giving circle is simple - give and fundraise together so that we can support social justice work by and for Asian Pacific Americans, because this important work is so underfunded.

We are excited to open our next BMPP Giving Circle micro-grant cycle with a call to center Joy as a Liberating Force. In a world where our communities continuously fight for justice and equity is often filled with grief and urgency, we believe joy is a necessary act of care, resistance and reimagination. For this grant cycle, we’re seeking to support projects that intentionally weave joy into social justice work; not as an afterthought, but as a vital source of strength, care, and collective liberation to build power and possibilities.

Deadline: Sunday, June 8, 2025

Community, our 2024 Grant Cycle is open. We are accepting proposals till July 10, 2024.

We seek projects that advance social justice with Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities, as well as the AMEMSA (Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim, and South Asian) communities, in creating a world where individuals are nurtured and families are supported to build thriving communities. When we say "unique," we are referring to new, innovative, and timely projects. BMPP provides grants of up to $5,000 for social justice-focused projects led by or serving AANHPI communities, including the AMEMSA communities.

I was honored to accept the Innovations in Philanthropy Award on behalf of our BMPP Giving Circle families. I started BMPP in 2013 with two Hmong sisters, Terri Thao and Kaohly Vang Her. We are now 17 Asian American families strong. We have provided over $300,000 to over 60 projects.

Together, we have helped to change the face of philanthropy. We demonstrate that grantmaking processes can be made accessible and easier for grantseekers and they will still have great impact. We show that aspiring to achieve justice and equity requires that we not just talk about all the challenges in the community but we must also invest in the ideas of community doers, even if their projects or organizations are small, new, undergoing change or viewed as risky.

When we trust and believe in communities to solve their problems they always make change possible. Our goal has never been to replace what institutional philanthropy (eg - foundations) should be doing; in fact, they should be doing more and we join in that advocacy. We tap into the tools of American philanthropy because it helps us to build on our cultures of generosity so that we can extend our hands of support to those beyond our own families/clans/ethnic/cultural groups. We involve our families, including children, because we know they are not just tomorrow’s leader; they are leaders today.

I am just grateful to have so many bad mo pho phamilies in this work and can’t thank them enough for being a part of this.

We’re proud to be the recipient of this year’s Twin Cities Business Magazine’s Innovations in Philanthropy Award.

“We hope that we demonstrate there is a different way to do grantmaking that is more accessible, that is more community-focused, and that will still have the impact that philanthropy always talks about,” says Bo Thao-Urabe, BMPP Co-Founder.

This group created its own philanthropy model to make giving, and receiving, more accessible to Asian Americans in Minnesota.
