Superintendent Dr. Lisa Sayles-Adams sat down with MPR News' Angela Davis on Wednesday morning to discuss the School Transformation process and what’s next for Minneapolis Public Schools.

They talked about why the Superintendent recommended pausing school mergers and closures for the 2027-28 school year, what we heard from families and staff, and how we’ll keep working with our community to make MPS the best place to work and receive an education.

Climb Theatre Brings SEL Plays to Bethune Arts Elementary

On Friday, 10/2, Climb Theatre visited the Bethune Performance Space, and they performed two plays for us about Social Emotional Learning - one for older students, and one for younger students. Both plays emphasized perseverance, the ability to overcome challenges to achieve your goals. Perseverance is a great complement to Bethune’s theme for the 2026-27 school year: “Celebrating Excellence: Our Time to Shine!” We need to work hard and stay focused when things are difficult in order to achieve excellence.

Our third, fourth, and fifth grade students watched Leilani’s Lemonade, a story about Luke and Leilani, young friends who were trying to run a lemonade stand to make money for a new bike but who also needed to do their homework.

Some colorful characters appeared to help the kids think about working toward their goals – even when it was difficult, and about breaking big jobs into smaller “bites” to make the tasks more manageable.

Next, our High Five, Kindergarten, first grade and second grade students learned about perseverance from Arlo and Sara the TRYceratops in Dig, Dino, Dig!

Arlo’s dog buried the dinosaur diorama he made for a school project. While Arlo was looking for the diorama in his backyard he found a TRYceratops who taught us some fun songs and dance moves as we learned to keep trying even when things get tough.

We were very proud of what a great audience the students were. Thank you for visiting us, Climb Theatre!
