Sunday marks the 1-year anniversary of the assassination of Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, and the attempt on the lives of Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette. We are still shaken and still grieving. Political violence has no place here, or anywhere.
It has been an intense year, and weβre reflecting on what it really means to feel safe in our communities. To us, safety looks like strong public schools, safe and stable housing, and a state where performers and workers are valued for our labor. It looks like living free from gun violence and fear that we could be hurt based on what we believe, what we look like, or where we come from.
We feel grateful for the way Rep. Hortman pushed at the State Capitol to make our state safer and better for all of us.
We knew last year β and then we felt it again during the violent occupation of our state this winter β that these acts of violence aim to make us feel hopeless and afraid to stand up for our communities and our freedoms. But we will not let that stand. Time and time again, we will continue to show up for our neighbors and organize alongside our elected officials for communities where all of us can live free from fear and violence. We keep us safe.
