A message from NGC’s Tribal Governance Program Manager Michelle Red Day to the Lower Brule community:
“Lower Brule, we want to see you there! Next week, Native Governance Center is hosting two nights of candidate forums at the Lower Brule Community Center on August 18th and August 19th.

On Tuesday, August 18th, come meet the candidates running for Executive Committee and Chief Judge. And on Wednesday, August 19th, hear from the candidates running for Council Member.

Come hear what the candidates have to say, ask your questions, and get informed before you cast your vote. And, we’ve got you covered for dinner. Dinner will be provided both evenings, so bring your questions, bring your family, and come be part of the conversation.

We’ll see you next week at the Lower Brule Community Center on August 18th and 19th at 5:30 PM on both nights.”

During our recent listening tour, we learned that Native nation rebuilding is happening across communities! Program Director Michaela Madrid shared some thoughts from their time on the road.

“We recently visited Ho-Chunk Inc. on our Nebraska Listening Tour. Our trip to the Cornhusker state focused on connecting with Native Nations, learning about their peoples, and identifying opportunities to partner with us as we expand our programming in the region.

We met with President & CEO Lance Morgan, the org's first-ever employee, and his incredible team!

On the tour around their community, we saw firsthand how they create beneficial community spaces that empower their citizens. We visited their Headquarters and the brand-new Boys and Girls Club. I loved visiting one of the Pre-K classes and got a hug from the cutest little one ever! We checked out housing units meant for tribal members at affordable rates, tied with programming geared towards homeownership education.

It was incredible to see all the great work they’re doing for their community, and inspiring to learn about their history and successes with Native Nation Rebuilding. We can’t wait to see what they do next and look forward to opportunities to come and be a part of it!"

Join us for the 2026 Lower Brule Sioux Tribe Candidate Forums at the Lower Brule Community Center. On Tuesday, August 18th, community members are invited to hear directly from candidates running for the positions of Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary/Treasurer, and Chief Judge for the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe. On Wednesday, August 19th, community members will hear from candidates running for the position of Council Member.

Candidate forums create space for voters to learn about the individuals seeking leadership roles, hear their perspectives, and ask questions about the future of their Nation.

Doors open at 5:30 PM, and dinner will be provided. The forum begins at 6:25 PM, featuring opening statements, community questions, and closing remarks.

These forums are moderated by Native Governance Center as part of our work supporting strong tribal governance and informed community participation. If you are a community member of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe, we encourage you to attend in person or watch virtually on the Communications page.

📣 Share your thoughts on the Fort Belknap Buffalo Program Conservation Plan at the 2nd Annual Buffalo Day on Thursday, August 13th.

Native Governance Center will be at Fort Belknap's Buffalo Day to collect community input on the Fort Belknap Buffalo Program Conservation Plan. This is the first in a two-part series focused on the Conservation Plan.

Join us for an incredible day at the People's Creek Buffalo Pasture from 9:00 AM- 4:00 PM, hosted by the ANC Buffalo Research & Education Center and the Fort Belknap Indian Community. Your input will help shape the 5-year FBIC Buffalo Program Conservation Plan. Additional input meetings will be held September 29th -October 1st in Harlem, Hayes, and Lodge Pole.

The 2026 Women Empowering Women for Indian Nations (WEWIN) Conference is over, but our staff who attended carry forward the inspiration, lessons, and connections.

We are grateful to have met so many powerful Indigenous women and hope our program offerings, swag, and candy helped fuel the women of the Native Nation Rebuilding movement.

A big thank you to WEWIN, conference staff, presenters, and the Muscogee Nation for hosting us at the beautiful River Spirit Resort along the Arkansas River. We look forward to seeing you again!
