As a salute to the inaugural class of the University of Minnesota Medical School CentraCare Regional Campus St. Cloud, the MMA held an open house at its Board Chair’s home.

The evening event included medical students, who are just completing their first year at the new campus, MMA leadership, St. Cloud-area physicians, and leadership from the University of Minnesota Medical School CentraCare Regional Campus St. Cloud.

The first cohort, which included 24 students, began their medical school journey in the fall of 2025.

The Minnesota Legislature adjourned on May 18, with several MMA priority bills passing, and now just await Gov. Tim Walz’s signature before becoming law.

“It went about as well as we could have realistically hoped for,” said Chad Fahning, MPP, MMA’s senior manager of lobbying and state legislative affairs. “Given it was a non-budget year with split partisan control of the House, we came into session with an understanding that little would get done. However, we passed several priority bills and advanced other high-profile bills like federal Medicaid conformity and a bailout for HCMC. Minnesota’s patients could not afford inaction on these items and we got them done.”

The MMA Board of Trustees recently approved five new policies that went through The Pulse, and heard from former Minnesota Health Commissioner Jan Malcolm, who was recently appointed by Gov. Tim Walz to serve as a special advisor on hospital and healthcare finances.

The approved Pulse policies included:

🔹 Support for the completion of medical directives before elective surgeries, which was submitted by the Resident Fellow Section

🔹 Support for healthcare supply chain resilience, which was submitted by Jovany Betancourt, Ph.D, a medical student

🔹 Various alcohol-related policies, submitted by the Public Health Committee, that dealt with monitoring and public communication of alcohol-related harms; alcohol use screening and treatment; and alcohol use among women.

One proposed policy on alcohol use and driving was referred to the Advocacy & Policy Committee for further consideration.

Malcolm discussed the scope of her new role, the legislative agreement for Hennepin Healthcare, and the related task force established to consider future legislative recommendations on the ownership, governance, and financing of Hennepin Healthcare. She noted the need for broader community discussions about policy changes needed to sustain access to healthcare services, particularly considering the impacts of the looming federal Medicaid cuts as the result of H.R. 1.

The first female cross-country skier to represent Mexico in the Olympics will give an inspiring talk on resilience at the Empowering Physicians event on September 25.

Regina Martinez-Lorenzo, MD, a 2021 graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School, and now an emergency medicine physician in Miami, will detail how she first learned to cross-country ski in Minneapolis’ Theodore Wirth Park and, five years later, competed in the 10K freestyle cross-country ski event at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano-Cortina, Italy, this past February.

The Empowering Physicians event will take place Friday, September 25, at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, 2400 3rd Ave. S. The event will also include educational sessions on how the One Big Beautiful Bill Act will affect the practice of medicine in Minnesota, and a deep dive into the state of medical legal affairs in Minnesota.

In addition, the event will feature a poster symposium for physicians-in-training, and an exhibitor section. Copic is the event’s premier sponsor.

Registration will open soon.

Dozens of physicians, physicians-in-training, and other healthcare professionals gathered at the Capitol recently to participate in Protect Minnesota’s "White Coats at the Capitol for Gun Violence Prevention.”

The press event was organized by Protect Minnesota to put pressure on House GOP leadership to bring SF 4067, which recently passed the Senate, to the House floor for a vote. The legislation is an MMA legislative priority, and includes a statewide ban on assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, and mental health initiatives.
