Kevin's Legacy

Kevin's Legacy Navigating the journey of brain injury, TBI and CTE is a painful process for the victim of the disease and for their family and friends.

As time passes, more and more people are recognizing that CTE and TBI are serious medical conditions. Currently,Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a diagnosis made after death. It is essentially has been a "death sentence" with no hope of being stayed. New advancements in research are beginning to ways to identify CTE before death. This will lead to early identification, and advancements in

treatments. Today, there is no cure and no effective treatment. People who have received the diagnosis after their death, suffered a mystifying series of symptoms from the degenerative neurological progression of the disease. Navigating this journey is a painful process for the victim of the disease and for the family and friends of the victim. I will share my experience as the mother of Kevin, who was diagnosed with CTE 6 months after his death in January 2017. I will share links to relevant research and other articles. I will provide a forum for people who are struggling with traumatic brain injury, and for the friends and family members who care about them. My purposes:
- bring awareness to others about this degenerative disease
- explore experiences with the challenges that it presents
- move our communities forward so that we can find effective treatments and strategies to cope with this condition

Former U.S. Army Sergeant Kevin Ash passed away five years ago today at 34 years old. Ash was an accomplished athlete who joined the military after 9/11. During his tours he was exposed to brain trauma from IED blasts and experienced blackouts, anxiety, and depression before being honorably discharged in 2012. The next year, a tackle during rugby led to a TBI which sent Ash into a coma and left him blind, hearing impaired, and with early onset dementia. After his death in 2017, Ash was diagnosed with CTE by researchers at the VA-BU-CLF Brain Bank.
