The Labor community lost someone special. Khalid served as an AFSCME Local 9 rep with the City of Minneapolis and Park Board, and those of us who worked with him knew how much he gave to this work and to the people around him.

He was 26 years old. His wife is pregnant with their first child.

No family should have to face grief and new parenthood alone. Please consider showing up for them the way Khalid showed up for all of us.

🤍Share this so his family knows they are surrounded by support.

✊🏽 Our fight is not over — but we won this round.

100+ Laborers and public employees packed the chambers, the overflow room, and the hallway to make our voices heard.

The Minneapolis Charter Commission voted overwhelmingly to reject every single anti-worker amendment — Just Cause, appeal rights, seniority, hiring protections. All of it — defended. Thank you all for showing up!

They came for our rights. We came with our people. 🟠

Visited a public park? Enjoyed an outdoor community festival? Flushed your toilet?

You have public employees to thank, including members of LIUNA Local 363.

Public service workers are the backbone of our community — maintaining roads, bridges, sewers, and parks, managing the tree canopy, setting up and cleaning up after public events, delivering clean drinking water to your tap, and caring for public housing facilities. They show up every day to keep our community safe, clean, and livable.

But their commitment goes beyond the work itself. Local 363 advocates for safe jobsites, discrimination-free workplaces, and the rights of every worker under their collective bargaining agreements.

For generations, Local 363 and the broader labor movement have been essential to Minnesota's democracy — proving that the power of many will always stand up to the power of money, both on the job and in the halls of government.

This Public Service Recognition Week, we honor the hard-working members of City Employees Local 363!

This is EXACTLY why union membership matters. When the Minneapolis Park Board tried to force new mom Indica Medeiros to pay back over $13,000 in maternity leave benefits after she couldn't return to work, Local 363 helped her FIGHT BACK.

💪 We filed an unfair labor practice charge and stood with Indica every step of the way. Now the Park Board has completely reversed course and changed their heartless policy.

As Indica said: "It was a huge relief to get the letter that they will no longer be legally pursuing me to enforce this policy. I couldn't do it without the help from my union and the support of everyone I talked to. I'm glad I get to finally fully focus on my family and the health of my babies."

Indica was a dedicated park worker who took paid parental leave after her son was born prematurely.

Like any new parent facing unexpected challenges, she couldn't return to work despite her efforts to do so.

The Park Board responded by dropping a bombshell: pay back nearly $14,000 in wages, or we'll take you to court.

Read and remember Indica's story. If you’rea Minneapolis voter, vote for Park Board candidates who will treat workers and their families with dignity and respect in November.

It's time for a pro-worker Park Board that takes care of the people who take care of our parks.

The Laborers’ Union is objecting to the treatment of a worker who tried to resign to care for her prematurely born child.
