Meals On Wheels

Meals On Wheels Meals on Wheels serves hot and frozen meals and provides daily check-ins.

Metro Meals on Wheels is the association of 27 Meals on Wheels programs in the Twin Cities metro area. With our program partners, we lead the effort to make sure people in our community receive the nutritious meals and the human connection they need to help them live independently. Meals on Wheels is a community-based service that provides fresh, nutritious meals delivered directly to the homes of

seniors and individuals with disabilities throughout the Twin Cities. In addition to regularly providing healthy foods, caring volunteers provide social connection that helps meal recipients remain living independently in their own homes. With the help of Meals on Wheels programs, seniors and people with disabilities get the nourishment and human connection needed to support daily activities, while reducing the need for medical support. For some recipients, these daily meals are the difference between living in their own homes and moving to a nursing home. Meals on Wheels could not exist without the help of volunteers who deliver the meals and donors who help those who cannot afford it pay for the meals.

Ron, who is 86 years old, has been losing his independence over the past few years, but with daily check-ins from his children - and Amherst H. Wilder Foundation Meals on Wheels delivering over the lunch hour - he was able to spend additional years in the family's home in St. Paul's North End. It's the same house where he lived for 60 years, including 13 years since he lost his wife, Lynne.

When a spot opened in an assisted living living facility, Ron's daughter Deb felt both relief and gratitude. It was exactly the right moment for Ron to move. Thanks to Meals on Wheels, that moment didn't come any sooner than it had to.

Until five years ago, Eugene had never lived alone.“I just never really adapted to it and taking care of everything by myself,” he says.

Like Eugene, 71% of Twin Cities meal recipients live alone. Regularly cooking meals that comprise a balanced diet can be a challenge for older adults who live alone, particularly for those with limited mobility or budgets. Read about how Meals on Wheels became a part of Eugene's story in our latest blog post on our website at https://meals-on-wheels.com/blog/meals-provide-comfort-and-well-balanced-diet/
