Please be aware of a bail scam targeting families of individuals in custody in Minnesota.
How the scam works:
Callers contact family members of individuals held at the jail, falsely claiming there has been an update to their case. The scammers state that the person can be immediately released if specific fees are paid over the phone, commonly citing:
• Direct payment of bail/bond fees
• Payment to qualify for electronic home monitoring (EHM)
What to advise clients and families:
• Do not send money or pay over the phone: Official bail and monitoring fees are not collected through unsolicited telephone demands.
• Verify independently: If a family member receives a suspicious call, they should take down the caller's details, hang up, and call the jail directly to verify case status and legitimate release requirements.
