Come to the Pow Wow on Full Moon

Friday, September 13, 2019
Meet at St. Peter’s Church Grounds, Hwy 13 in Mendota
1405 Sibley Memorial Hwy, Mendota MN
At 5 pm sharp we will light the Sacred Fire and share Coldwater Water.
Bring a lawn chair to sit on and a food item for the potluck feast. Women are asked to wear skirts. See the flyer below.

The September full moon celebration coincides with the opening ceremony of the Mendota Dakota 20th anniversary Pow Wow. Full moon walks have been held every month at Coldwater since 2000 but this moon is different. We will take sacred Coldwater water to the Mendota Dakota community.

The Pow Wow itself begins on Saturday (9/14) with Grand Entry at 1 pm and runs until 9:30 pm. On Sunday (9/15) the Pow Wow is celebrated from 1 to 5:30 pm followed by the feast. People are asked for a $5 entry button donation (but no one turned away).

Besides people-watching and fry bread, Indian tacos, Native handicrafts for sale and the sound of the drum echoing throughout the day, all nations are welcome to dance. Bring a chair or blanket to sit on. Women are asked to wear a skirt in respect while dancing or just bring (or purchase) a shawl to wrap around your waist.

Friends of Coldwater might consider signing up for a 1 or 2-hour shift at the Coldwater Booth at the Pow Wow on Saturday or Sunday between 12:30 and 5:30 pm. It’s a great people-watching view from our booth at the Pow Wow and a pleasant sit-down-&-chat job, especially if you bring your own chair. Please reply to this volunteer opportunity at: [email protected]

This is the first full moon in 19 years that we haven’t met at Coldwater.
Sunset 7:28 pm (1 hour, 8 minutes earlier than the previous full moon)
Moonrise 7:44 pm (1 hour, 41 minutes earlier than last month’s full moon)
Exact minute of full moon 11:33 pm
Note: If your calendar was printed on the US East Coast it will put the full moon 33 minutes into Saturday, but for the rest of the country full moon is on Friday the 13th.

We are stunned over the loss of Jim Anderson Red Sky who passed into the Spirit World last Thursday, June 27, 2019.

Elli (“Freedom”), Rory and their three boys have traveled down from northern Minnesota to be together, to remember and to renew our commitment to the trees, the water and to each other.

Here’s the message from Elli & Rory:
Hello friends,
We will be at Coldwater Springs today from 10am until sundown. Everyone is invited to come down, to spend time together, with the loss of our friend and brother Jimmy.
Bring anything that you feel like sharing, to help yourself or others during this time.
We will have a meal at 6, bring something if you can, and bring a bowl too.
Love, Elli and Rory

Please come to Coldwater this afternoon (7/1/19) and BRING:
Some food to share along with your bowl & cutlery, a bottle to collect Coldwater
Your chair
And most of all, your Memories

This Sunday and Monday night you'll be able to see the closest, brightest, biggest-looking full Moon since 1948. You won't see a Moon like this again until the year 2034. If you want to try photographing this so-called Beaver Moon (borrowed from a Native American name for a November full moon), here are some tips: http://lifehacker.com/how-to-take-a-non-crappy-picture-of-the-moon-1788768029. We would love to see people from all 50 states and as many countries as possible share photos of this full Moon with us—whether they're shot with cell phones or telescopes, and whether they're close-ups or Moonrises over the landscape (giving a sense of place...love that) or something in between. During the October full Moon, people from 38 states and two countries shared their photos with us and the experience was fun for everyone

Would you be willing to share your Beaver Moon photo with us? Start thinking about it (and tell your friends in other states and countries)! Huge thanks to Jacob Baker for sharing with us the beautiful Moon photo shown here, one of the many amazing shots he has taken in Massachusetts with his telescope.

(If you enjoy our Facebook posts and want to see more, please take a few seconds to "like" our page. You can find it by clicking on "The Naturalist's Notebook" above. We're excited that so many thousands of you are tuned in to nature and science. Thank you—and feel free to pass the word to others!) thenaturalistsnotebook.com is our website.

On November 14th, we’ll get the closest full moon since 1948, and it won’t happen again for 18 years. If you want to snap a photo of the moon in all its glory, be prepared. Here’s how to take a picture of next week’s supermoon that will do it some justice, and may even be wallpaper-worthy.
