[Español abajo] Today, Mayor Jacob Frey vetoed a measure that would extend the eviction notification timeline in Minneapolis from 30 to 45 days. Esmeralda, a roofer and member of CTUL Action Fund, testified at the Minneapolis City Council meeting on April 21st, alongside many other workers and community members.

In her testimony, Esmeralda shared how she and her partner have been out of work because of Operation Metro Surge for over four months and how extending the eviction timeline will be life-saving for her family and so many other working families like hers.

Today she reacts to Jacob Frey’s decision to veto the measure: “It feels like the mayor isn’t listening to us, like he values other voices more than those who are suffering the worst impacts of Operation Metro Surge.”

The fight is not over - stay tuned for how you can plug in.

The fight to keep our neighbors housed is not over. At the Capitol, we are still fighting for a bill that would extend the statewide eviction notice timeline from 14 to 30 days and provide $40 million of rent relief statewide. It passed in the Senate, and now we need strong leadership in the House to move it forward.

🚨Representatives need to hear from people across the state telling them that we need rent relief NOW🚨

Go to bit.ly/MNRentReliefNow to email your rep. And share this link with your own network to ensure that our representatives and Speaker Lisa Demuth hear from as many of us as possible. Thank you for taking action to keep working families across Minnesota housed.

Keep Minnesotans In Our Homes!

SEIU members have been pushing our elected officials to address the crisis facing renters across our state, but the House GOP is blocking money from going to our neighbors.

[Español abajo] Today Esmeralda, a CTUL Action Fund worker leader, spoke at the Minnesota Capitol about the urgent need for rental assistance for families across Minnesota who were impacted by Operation Metro Surge. Yesterday the Senate passed a bill to allocate $40 million in emergency rental assistance and extend the pre-eviction notice period from 14 to 30 days. This bill will save many people’s lives.  Esme shared her personal story as a roofer of how Operation Metro Surge affected her and her family, and urged Speaker Lisa Demuth and the entire House to stand with Minnesotans who need it most and do the right thing today.

We were honored to stand beside our close allies at , , and to say it loud and clear: eviction prevention saves lives, and we need strong leadership from the House to survive the crisis caused by federal occupation.

[Español abajo] 🚨BREAKING: Over 40 Organizations, including CTUL Action Fund, Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation, SEIU Local 26, United Renters for Justice - InquilinXs UnidXs por Justicia, Unidos MN, New Justice Project MN, and Jewish Community Action call on representatives to ban agreements between ICE and local law enforcement.

For months, ICE agents have terrorized Minnesotan workers in their homes, on the streets, and at their workplaces. Thanks to tireless organizing to resist ICE and keep our communities safe, the Trump administration has announced their plan to withdraw federal agents from our state. But this is nothing more than sleight of hand: Trump is trying to give local law enforcement deportation powers so that the terror campaign against immigrants continues even as federal agents leave.

Under the federal 287(g) program, local police and sheriff departments partner with ICE to carry out deportation proceedings. Already, seven counties in Minnesota have these agreements in place—meaning that immigrants continue to face the threat of deportation whether or not federal agents remain in state. When local law enforcement becomes an extension of ICE, immigrants lose all access to public safety; even calling 911 becomes dangerous. Every community is less safe when the people charged with protecting us are also working to deport our neighbors, family members, and loved ones.

Across the country, states are moving to ban 287(g) agreements and keep their communities safe. Minnesotans know better than anyone the threat that ICE poses to our safety. That’s why we’re calling on our state and local representatives to ban 287(g) agreements in Minnesota and keep our communities safe.

Co-enforcement, a critical program that protects vulnerable workers against wage theft and other abuses, is fully restored for 2026! This is a huge victory for Minneapolis workers. This win was possible because workers showed up to the City Council budget hearings and fought for this funding over the past three months. Thank you to the City Council members who voted unanimously to stand with workers today and restore funding! Special thanks to , , , , , and , the authors of the budget amendment.

⚠️Right now, the funding for a program that protects workers from wage theft is on the chopping block.⚠️

Gabi, a worker, writes: “In August, Mayor Jacob Frey released his budget, which would cut the program in half — from $658,824 to $309,646. This is out of the city’s 2026 proposed civil rights budget of $7.8 million This is unacceptable — are workers rights really only worth 4% of the total civil rights budget?”

In a moment where low-wage workers, particularly immigrant workers, are seeing increasing attacks from the Federal government, any cuts to this program will be especially dangerous and damaging to workers and their families. Head to minnesotareformer.com or link in our bio to read the full op-ed.
