Burning on Private Lands in the Duluth Area and North Shore - Event Re-Cap

On August 19, Dovetail’s Abby Andrus and Julie Allen of Lake Superior Sustainable Farming Association hosted an informational session on using intentional fire for forest health, food production, and wildfire resilience. The event brought together landowners, fire officials, DNR, agriculturalists, and community members for a productive discussion about fire management and future training opportunities, including the potential to form a prescribed burn association.

Abby also recently spoke with Leo Babeu of Two Harbors Community Radio about the event, the role of fire in northern Minnesota ecosystems, and management options for private landowners. Listen to the interview here.

Environmental Justice and Ecological Care in Ramsey County Parks

This project examines the relationship between ecological monitoring, invasive species, and environmental justice in Ramsey County, Minnesota. Using data on invasive species, parks, tree canopy, and surrounding communities, the analysis explores how monitoring efforts vary across parks and identifies areas where environmental justice considerations, lower tree canopy, and limited ecological monitoring overlap. The project provides a starting point for considering where future monitoring, restoration, native planting, and green-space investment may be most beneficial.

Kathryn Fernholz to Present at U-M Climate Week

We are excited to share Emerging Innovations in Mass Timber: Regional Advancements in Policy, Practice, and Education, a co-produced event from University of Michigan – Taubman College’s Climate Futures and MassTimber@MSU at Michigan State University. The event brings together leaders from policy, industry, design, and education to explore how Michigan can advance its emerging mass timber economy and become a regional leader in low-carbon construction. Three panels will focus on building momentum through networks, programs, and policies; educating future professionals; and taking a full systems values approach to connect forests, manufacturing, construction, communities, and environmental outcomes. Dovetail’s Kathryn Fernholz will join Susan Jones and Ben Ridderbos for the final panel, A Full Systems Values Approach.

Join us for a panel discussion bringing together state, local government, and project developer perspectives on how communities can engage effectively and constructively with data centers. Speakers will share tools, resources, strategies, and real-world experiences for navigating development, as well as explore design innovations, impact mitigation strategies, and common misconceptions about data centers.

We’re pleased to welcome our speakers:

Karl Green is a Community Planning Specialist with the UW Madison Division of Extension Community Development Institute. Karl helps communities understand and navigate large-scale land use changes, providing access to university resources and research on community land use issues. He previously served as Program Manager for UW Extension’s Local Government Education program.

Abby Smith is the President & CEO of Team Pennsylvania, a public-private partnership focused on accelerating inclusive economic growth across the Commonwealth. With 20 years of experience in strategic planning, cross-sector collaboration, grant and project management, and state-level initiatives, Abby brings extensive experience working with communities and partners across Pennsylvania and other states.

Josh Rabina is the CEO of Sentinel Data Centers, which he co-founded in 2001. Josh has overseen the development and operation of Sentinel’s data center campuses and customer projects and brings extensive experience working with end users, communities, and development partners. Josh continues to lead the day-to-day activities of the integrated firm that is collectively executing over $6 billion of ongoing or near-term development.
