This afternoon, Hopkins High School received a phone call that was interpreted as a potential threat. Out of an abundance of caution and to ensure the safety of students and staff inside, the high school was briefly placed in a secure hold.

We will continue to remain on scene as school staff completes their release procedures.

At this time, students and staff are safe and there is no larger threat to the community. If you have any questions about release procedures, please refer to the school’s email detailing their next steps.

Mental Health Awareness Month is an opportunity to highlight the work being done every day to support those experiencing mental health challenges in our community.

Since 2019, the department has had an embedded social worker who helps connect residents to mental health resources, therapy, medication support and other services. In 2023, officers made 416 referrals to the social worker. In 2025, referrals increased to just under 700.

Nearly every Minnetonka PD officer has also completed Crisis Intervention Training (CIT), which provides specialized training in mental illness, crisis response, de-escalation, substance use disorders, su***de assessment and more. In addition, officers complete annual mental health training to continue building their knowledge and skills.

The department is continuing to expand these efforts through new pilot programs, including a co-response team made up of a dedicated officer and social worker. Read more about the efforts of our social worker here: https://bit.ly/4vfeIoR

Records Archive Search Offline: Due to a planned system upgrade, the Records Archive Search will be unavailable beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, May 22 through Wednesday, May 27.

As we honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country this Memorial Day, we also wish everyone a safe holiday weekend.

If you’re traveling or celebrating:
- Buckle up. Every trip, every time.
- Plan for a sober ride home
- Put distractions away and stay focused on the road
- Slow down and give yourself extra travel time

May we never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and may everyone have a safe Memorial Day weekend.

A big congratulations to one of our K-9 detectives and their K-9 Iggy, assigned to the West Metro Drug Task Force (WMDTF), for receiving the Quarterly Award from the National Police Canine Association - NPCA .

It all stems from a search warrant, when Iggy started showing a noticeable change in behavior and then ran down the hallway into a bedroom, where he sat right next to a large black suitcase – his way of saying there’s something fishy in here. Investigators began a search of the suitcase and located approximately 144 pounds of methamphetamine.

The suspect in this case pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 63 months in prison. Great work, detective, and K-9 Iggy, and congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!

The West Metro Drug Task Force (WMDTF) is a multi-jurisdictional task force supported by the North Central High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) program and includes officers from departments all over Hennepin County, including HCSO, Orono Police Department, Medina Police Department - MN, West Hennepin Public Safety, Minnetrista, South Lake Minnetonka Police Department, Edina Police & Fire Departments, City of Richfield Police Department, Eden Prairie Police Department, St. Louis Park, Minnesota Police Department, Minnetonka Police Department and Hopkins Police Department.
