NDSU North Central Research Extension Center

NDSU North Central Research Extension Center The North Central Research Extension Center is located one mile south of Minot on U.S. 83.

The 1200-acre research center was established in 1945 for agricultural field research and pure seed increase. Today, it specializes in crop and Extension education activities, and in foundation seed production. The surrounding area includes the largest durum wheat producing counties in the state. Fifty percent of the nation's canola and forty percent of the nation's durum is produced in counties s

erved by the Center. The Center is located on the border of North Dakota's two most prominent soil and vegetation regions - the dark brown soils of the semi-arid grassland in the west, and the black soils of central North Dakota's subhumid grassland. With gently rolling land and 16.5 inches of annual precipitation, the Center's main research efforts involve grain variety evaluation, w**d control, tillage and fertilizer tests. Research is conducted on small grains, oilseeds, row crops, legumes, forages and other specialty crops. Production is evaluated for no-till and conventional tillage cropping systems.

πŸ„ Throwback Thursday: Learning to Build Better Fences πŸ„πŸ€ 

Last month, the NDSU North Central Research Extension Center had the pleasure of hosting a fencing school, bringing together producers, landowners, and ag professionals for a hands-on day of learning. We had a great turn out, and the wind didn't blow anyone away! 🌬

The day was filled with demonstrations from Gallagher, Stay-Tuff and NDSU Extension, discussions on fencing law from Braaten Law Firm, and considerations for how fencing and grazing management work together from USDA-NRCS.

If you missed the event, you're in luck! The fencing demonstration is still standing and will be available to view during the NCREC Field Day on Wednesday, July 15. Stop by to get a closer look, ask questions, and pick up a few ideas for your next fencing project while you're touring the rest of our research plots.

The future of pulse breeding starts with listening, and the Pulse Team wants to hear from you.

Our field pea are looking fantastic this season, making it the perfect time to visit the North Central Research Extension Center and share your thoughts on where pulse breeding should go next. As Dr. Atanda begins leading NDSU's pulse breeding program, we're looking for input from the people who know these crops best.

πŸŽ†πŸŒΎ While we were celebrating America's 250th birthday this holiday weekend, our small grains were celebrating in their own way. πŸŒΎπŸŽ†

The hot, humid Fourth of July weather may have sent many of us looking for shade, but our oats, durum, and hard red spring wheat were thriving. With heads fully emerged and grain fill just around the corner, these fields will be ready to harvest in no time.

This year is especially meaningful for wheat at NDSU. As America celebrates 250 years, one of our most historic spring wheat varieties, Ceres, is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Released by the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station in 1926, Ceres was the first spring wheat variety developed at NDSU. Its high yield and rust resistance made it the dominant spring wheat of its time and laid the genetic foundation for generations of wheat breeding that continue today.

From century-old milestones to the next generation of improved varieties, every green plot at the NCREC represents another step forward for North Dakota agriculture.

Every July, vibrant yellow canola blooms become one of the most recognizable flowers in North Dakota's patchwork quilt of fields. Those breathtaking landscapes aren't just beautifulβ€”they're also where research is helping shape the future of canola production.
