EVENT UPDATE – OSCODA COUNTY NIGHT OF PUBLIC SAFETY - JULY 14

Due to the forecasted extreme temperatures expected tomorrow, we have made the difficult decision to cancel and reschedule tomorrow’s Oscoda County Night of Public Safety.

The safety of our community, volunteers, first responders, vendors, and everyone planning to attend is our top priority. We want this to be a fun, safe event for everyone, and the expected heat makes that difficult.

We are currently working to secure a new date and will announce it as soon as possible.

We sincerely appreciate everyone’s understanding and look forward to seeing you at the rescheduled event.

911 Surcharge Q&A – Part 1

Q: I heard every device with an IP address will be charged the 911 surcharge. Is that true?

A: No. That is false.

The proposed 911 surcharge would only apply to devices that are capable of directly calling or texting 911.

For example:

✅ Cell phones would be assessed the surcharge.
✅ Traditional landlines would also be assessed the surcharge.
✅ Smart watches or other cellular-enabled devices that can make calls or send texts without being connected to a cell phone would also be assessed the surcharge (standalone cellular connection).
❌ Standard smart watches, tablets and laptops that must be connected to your phone via Bluetooth (or otherwise rely on your phone to make calls or send texts) would not be assessed the surcharge.

The key question is simple: Can the device independently make a phone call or send a text? If the answer is yes, it would be subject to the surcharge. If the answer is no, it would not.

We understand there has been a lot of misinformation circulating, and we want to make sure residents have accurate information before voting. We'll continue answering common questions in future posts as part of this Q&A series.
