We’re proud to introduce one of the newest members of our team at Oscoda County Veterans Affairs, Veteran Service Officer Vanessa Neff.

Vanessa served in the United States Army for over 22 years. During her military career, she worked in areas including death investigations, child abuse investigations, victim interviews, and also helped develop and provide death investigative training in Malaysia.

Vanessa is an accredited Veteran Service Officer and is available to assist veterans and their families with navigating VA benefits, claims, and available resources.

Vanessa chose to return to Oscoda County to continue serving the community she has long called home. A graduate of Fairview Area Schools, she has returned to her family’s farm as a fourth-generation farmer alongside her daughters, sister and her family, and her parents.

She brings both military experience and a strong personal connection to the veteran community. Vanessa enjoys helping veterans identify benefits and resources that are tailored to their individual situations, including unique or lesser-known programs veterans and their families may qualify for in addition to traditional VA benefits.

She shared that one of the things she values most about working with veterans is the camaraderie, shared experiences, and understanding that comes from military service.

Outside of the office, Vanessa enjoys spending time outdoors, working with her cows, chickens, and turkeys, attending live music events, traveling to visit friends and family, and getting back into crocheting, knitting, and sewing.

Veterans interested in scheduling an appointment with a Veteran Service Officer can contact Oscoda County Veterans Affairs for more information.

We’re excited to have Vanessa serving veterans here in Oscoda County and look forward to the experience, knowledge, and dedication she brings to the office.

Please join us in welcoming Vanessa to OCVA.

Myth:
You have to be a veteran to volunteer with Helping Hands for Heroes.

Fact:
Helping Hands for Heroes is open to veterans, veteran families, and community members who want to support local veterans and community projects across Oscoda County.

There are no obligations and no required time commitment — just an opportunity to help when and where you can.

Some volunteers may want to help with yard work, small projects, events, wellness activities, check-ins, or community support efforts. Others may simply want to be on the list in case something comes up they can assist with.

This program is built around community connection, volunteerism, and neighbors helping neighbors.

If you are interested in joining the volunteer list, contact our office:

Thank you to everyone who attended and supported this year’s Memorial Day Ceremony at the Oscoda County Veterans Memorial Park.

We appreciate seeing members of the community continue to recognize and honor those who gave their lives in service to our country.

Mio Social also shared a nice video from the ceremony and mentioned they will be offering veterans a free smoothie or slushie during their grand opening event this Saturday.

We’re always glad to see local businesses recognizing and supporting veterans within the community.

Thank you to everyone who joined us today at the Oscoda County Veterans Memorial Park as we gathered in remembrance of the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

Today’s ceremony was a meaningful reminder that Memorial Day is not simply about a long weekend or the beginning of summer — it is about honoring sacrifice, remembering the fallen, and ensuring their legacy is never forgotten.

Thank you to:

- Al Chaney for his remarks
- Tom Huber for leading prayer and reading the names of local veterans lost this past year
- VFW Scholarship speakers Kolby Alchin and Abigail Kovacs for sharing thoughtful reflections with the community
- The rifle squad and bugler for helping honor our fallen heroes through tradition and remembrance

We are also grateful to everyone who attended, supported, volunteered, donated refreshments, and helped make this ceremony possible.

The Oscoda County Veterans Memorial Park stands as a lasting reminder that remembrance belongs not only to one day each year, but to the entire community for generations to come.
