Residential Structure Fire Response
πŸ“… February 23, 2026

At 5:14 PM, Penn Fire and several of our mutual aid partners responded to a residential structure fire on Dogwood Road.

Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy smoke and visible flames from the front of the home. Firefighters initiated an aggressive interior attack, but due to strong wind conditions and deteriorating structural integrity, operations were transitioned to a defensive strategy to ensure firefighter safety.

The fire was brought under control at approximately 7:10 PM.

The homeowner arrived during the incident and confirmed no occupants were inside the residence other than a K9. Tragically, the dog did not survive the fire. Our thoughts are with the homeowner during this difficult time.

We would like to thank Centre Township Fire Department, Mishawaka Fire Department, Madison Township Volunteer Fire Department, Baugo Township Fire Department, Cleveland Township Fire Department, Wakarusa Volunteer Fire Department, Bremen Fire, Lakeville Fire , and South Bend Fire Department for their assistance and teamwork.

Strong work by all crews involved.

❄️ Ice Rescue Training ❄️

Penn Township Fire Department crews recently conducted ice rescue training to stay prepared for emergencies on frozen lakes, ponds, and waterways.

Ice conditions can change quickly, especially on rivers where moving water weakens ice from underneath. What looks solid can give way without warning, creating extremely dangerous situations.

During training, we utilized our new Rescue Deployment Craft (RDC). The RDC provides a safer, more stable platform for reaching victims on unstable ice and gives our crews greater control and capability when operating near moving water.

Training, equipment, and preparation make the difference when seconds count.

Remember β€” no ice is ever completely safe. If someone breaks through, call 911 immediately.
